Weekend OCC #3

Here's another vanilla game. Should be significantly different to #1 and #2 though.

Version: Civ 1.61
Civ: Arabia, Saladin
Difficulty: Emporer
Map: Fractal, standard size, high sea level, temperate climate
Speed: Normal
Extras: One-City-Challenge, Permenant Alliances
AIs: 6, hand-chosen by myself

Victory: All enabled, but you must win by culture.

As usual, I rerolled until I got a start with at least 2 food resources.

Enjoy!

I have yet to complete Weekend OCCs #1 and 2, but I'll see if I can get to this one. How do cultural victories work with OCCs? Certainly we cannot just reach Legendary in a single city. Is this why you have enabled Permanent Alliances? smile

Wow... this is an interesting puzzle...

Highlight for important Permament Alliance information, which you can learn without playing this game (ie it's not spoiler info, but you might want to learn things the hard, painful way.... if so... don't highlight!).

----

You can only form 1 permament alliance.
You must have had either a defensive pact or mutual military struggle for quite a while.
You cannot ever form a permament alliance with Tokugawa, Alexander or Napoleon. Don't even try.
You can perform terrain improvements in your Partner's territory.
You can settle great people in your partner's cities.

----

I'm not sure if this is even possible, but it'll be interesting to try.

It is possible - there has been at least 1 SG with this in mind. Also, PAs get their full city radius to 'work' (ie ignore cultural pressure) unless the city radii actually overlap.

Here is the link to the SG I referred to above.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Hi,

this sounds very interesting! I think I'll play this, but I will probably need a bit more than this weekend to finish. smile

Complete.

Cultural Victory in 1961 smoke.

It was too easy actually... I might have had luck on my side.

I decided to go with the plan of founding Conf and Tao, allowing the AI's to found the other religions, especially the early religions which would be critical for their high culture cities (how right I was).

I converted The French Man and the Mongol Man to my cause, in fact the Mongol managed to get the Oracle and Colossus in one city, and the Pryamids and Panatheon in another. I strongly considered making him my PA partner, but as the game progressed it become clear just how culturally powerful Gandhi was, with 4 religions and his love of all things culture, so I started relationship building with him. This took a long time without the benefit of shared religion. But I gifted him 10gpt which built up the resources bonus, and eventually the wisely chosen civics pushed me over the edge to friendly. I could've signed a PA with Kublai Khan much earlier.

Delhi achieved Legendary in 1844(!!), before I even signed the PA. I think it's only the second time I've seen an AI legendary city and certainly the earliest I've seen. By the end of the game it had nearly doubled in culture again.

In 1884 I formed a PA with Gandhi, using some of the tech (Gandhi was tech leader, by far) to bribe the world into war. I had been juggling relationships with KK and Gandhi, in order to maintain my def pact with Kublai I had to switch back into HRule in order to get to friendly and renew the def pact, fortunately progress on mutual civics is not lost when switching to another civic. Anyway after PA I could just bribe KK into war and forget about him.

In 1946 Mecca went Legendary. I was planning to time it to go legendary with Bombay, but decided to just get it out of the way asap so I could start buying units because now we were under siege by jerks.

in 1961 Bombay went Legendary. It was packing total culture/turn of 735, thanks largely to a lot of settled Great Artists - I think I sent over 6 or 7, and Gandhi settled at least one. Gandhi had managed to pack +400% multipliers into the city - as you can see, spreading Taoism paid off, being 50% of that.

Something I didn't do was build any wonders. The only world wonder I ended up with was the Conf shrine. I figured - and I was right - that with all the artist national wonders and by running tonnes of artists for the PA's 3rd city, that getting Legendary would be fairly trivial. Research wasn't really tight either, I pretty much beelined Mil.Trad, I didn't even need to, because it took me much, much, much longer to even get a def.pact with Gandhi. I coulda pretty much teched to Guilds and Nationalism then spammed out some camels and generated as many GA's as possible, letting the PA partner tech to Mil.Trad. Very lazy.

So it seems I was wrong that it would be difficult... then again there was probably some luck involved in Gandhi having two such good cities, even before I started settling GA's into Bombay it was generating over 300 cpt while the next best was only 120ish.

Also with the space race, it wasn't even close. I was a nice big dead weight on Gandhi's research and also sent him off after non-SS stuff, I secreted away two SS parts in my build queue as insurance and the rest of the world was far too busy warring to build many SS parts. However Bombay DID nearly fall to the Mongol and Incan alliance, on one turn all of it's defenders were badly damaged. But I had an Airport in Mecca so then I just started dropping in Mechinf and after that Bombay was under no real threat, since 100% of Bombay's culture came from within the city it wasn't like the enemy could do anything to stop the victory short of actually taking the city. Mecca wasn't threatened at all (both the Mongol and French armies were depleted killing off the female leaders).

Just curious Blake, were you using your enhanced AI? Because that might make this game a bit easier. wink

Nope. It'd make it harder actually. Because I added some code to force the AI to not build the Hermitage in the wonder city (old logic was that the more culture you gain from a building, the better it must be, so hermitage in capital = awesome!, but of course it's generally more useful to have the hermitage in the most culturally pressured place rather than most cultural place). What my enhanced AI would do is spread it's culture around the borders.... it might still manage to create a decent Bombay (to fight the pressure), but Delhi would not have been so awesome.
Also there might be more risk of them actually launching.

Altough the very latest version of my AI don't need no stinkin' PA to win a CV :D.

The ironical thing there? In my OCC win I signed the PA in 1884, the very turn the Monarch Ganhi here won his PA. So if I was using my enhanced AI Gandhi would've won right before I signed the PA, making it a cultural loss 8).
