This post is for our Lurkers' Code of Conduct. This may well fluctuate as we think of more things to put on and take off the list.

Dedicated Lurkers

1) a) Any lurker who chooses to SOLELY follow our team in PB3 MUST put the title 'Lurker of Pericles of Babylon' in their signature. This is for clarity and it also gives you greater rights in what you can post in this thread.

b) If you choose this option, you MUST only view our thread, including the 'No Player Thread' as that thread too can provide 'privileged information'.

c) You MAY read threads of any team which is destroyed, but only 10 TURNS AFTER said team has been destroyed.

2) You may answer any questions we pose regarding anything to do with the game.

3) If we ask for opinions on a series of choices (e.g. settling priorities on a dotmap), you may BOTH comment on those choices, and propose an alternative.

4) You can make comments on our diplomatic messages.

'Floating' Lurkers

1) The key rule : If in doubt, please post in the 'No Player Thread' first to check for spoilers.

2) You may answer any questions we pose regarding anything to do with the game - providing the answer does not contravene Code 1.

3) If we ask for opinions on a series of choices (e.g. settling priorities on a dotmap), you may ONLY comment on those choices, and CANNOT propose an alternative.

4) You may comment on diplomacy, providing your comments do not contravene Code 1.

Now we can get on with game-related things...

I have constructed a Microsoft Word document in which I have charted all of our opponents' Leader and Civ choices and all relevant info about these choices. I have also included my personal opinions on these choices.

This should now be attached to this thread for you all to peruse at your leisure.

We will likely be discussing this for a while and so please give us your thoughts.

hey TT, i'll be home after work. Can we makesure to both get a good look at our starting location before moving smile

let's pray for gold/multiple irrigated corn. ha

This is Whosit, checking in. No time to comment at length, but I'm glad to see that things are moving. Kyan, is the actual game set-up? If so, please get a good screen shot of the starting location (with resource indicators/maybe tile yield display ON). I'm not sure how often I'll be logging in to this game, but I certainly won't have time for most of today.

With a more pragmatic outlook, I'm just hoping that we start with some kind of happy resource in the BFC, and at least one or two decent food sources. And hammers. I looooooove hammers.

It's not up yet as far as i know. Lasttime the starting locations were emailed out. If that's not the case i'll get a picture here as soon as possible.

Yeah tile yield and resource indicators willbe on. i tend to leave them on at all times anyhow. there are a few little tricks you can use with them that you might otherwise miss.

Yes hammers are certainly nice. Perfect would be something we can farm using our starting techs giving a worker plenty to do. Worst case would be one cruddy food that we have to research to makeuse of. (We're guaranteed to get at least one as it's balanced. Would be expecting two but who knows?)

Yes, i'm double-posting in this thread already! Am i at 100 posts yet?

Dang, should have saved that one for something special. Oh well, onwards and upwards!

Well, the good news for you all is that i was saving copies of all the emails that were sent between TT, myself and Whosit,

The bad news is that i accidently deleted them because i am, first and foremost, a total numpty.

Soooo... (who better not be reading this! nono) i can tell you're all wondering how the heck we ended up at Pericles of Babylon.

If you're not i most certainly am. The general logic behind it is that we suck. Ha, or rather, we didn't play the snake pick so well. Me and TT intially disagreed on pretty much every leader trait.

I wanted financial, he wanted protective etc. So in the end, after some good input from Whosit, we decided the best way to keep everyone happy was to make BOTH of us miserable. Yeah, that's some impressive logic. Get used to it smoke

In seriousness though i'm a big fan of both of Pericles' traits. Creative will be good in a game where i predict there will be very little land to go around and philosophical has lots of uses. I don't predict running too much of a specialist economy tho i am open to persuasion. My main gripe is simply a lack of experience with it. Cottages i can do, i plonk em down and then forget about em whilst i go chat up Catherine. All this micro-management malarkey should be fun!

Early thoughts are to leverage the bowmen's defensive ability as a deterrant whilst moving quickly up to 4-5 cities. Grab writing, which will give a nice half price library leading to super early academy via scientists. Utilising both the creative and philo traits. Now how's that for some super gee whiz synergy. It's just like reading Sullla eh?

This plan will probably go totally to pot though when we start next to aggresive Rome at which point i will find someone else to blame (Damn map-makers!).

big thank you's to you, for reading this, for Whosit for his thoughts and opinions and TT for both putting up with me and his awesome work on the word document earlier!

Hmm, i forgot to post my reasons for Babylon. Unfortunately, it boils down to it being the best of a bad bunch. We wanted korea but alas it was not to be. So, after MUCH debating we settled on Maya. I hadn't pegged a team with Ragnar to grab them (with other options eg. sumeria, available) but that just highlights my further inadequacies as a psychic. After that pick, i am ashamed to admit i had a little strop as my fascination with turqoise died a quick death.

But! there was hope and it was in the shape of the most manly colour known to man. Pink! I was watching QI the other day and apparently pink was the original colour that boys used to dress in, and girls wore blue as it was seen as more effeminate. Somewhere in the blur of history, these became all entangled up and swapped over. See, i bet when you clicked this thread, you never thought you'd actually learn something! (totally civ-related rolleye ).

So babylon it was. The bowmen i mentioned earlier and the garden should help as a nice save of hammers. For us, it's half price and it kind of combines the colloseum with an aqueduct. No real achievement but as tesco has taught us: Every little helps!

Ha ha, well, I suppose I should add a little something to the pot here, but Kyan summed things up nicely. Yeah, our real mistake was picking leader first. TT even pointed out that the chances of anyone picking Pericles was pretty low. smoke But, hey, that's what makes this an adventure, am I right? I'd be far too boring if we were actually able to match our Leader traits to a civ, heh heh.

I have a little more experience with Specialist economies, although you usually don't want to fully rely on them, so we'll get to plant some of Kyan's beloved cottages. Early on, I see us building our cheap Libraries in order to run plenty of Scientists. Unless we're drowning in food, we'll probably avoid a foray into Caste System, although I am somewhat fond of that civic.

But, yes, Babylon was the best of some bad choices. Russia was TT's top pick, but I voted that down because 1) the UB comes too late to be useful, and 2) Cossacks are nice, but not the best UU in my opinion. I bought more into Kyan's reasoning that Bowmen might, at least, help us survive long enough to build some Libraries! At least we may succeed in our secret strategy: Pick a Leader and Civ that will confuse our opponents into submission!

TT's worksheet is very nice. I hope to comment on each team myself, but I'll probably have to break that into several posts. And no, that's not just to increase post count. lol

Something I would like to point out is that I don't think that we're the only team that got a little screwed. Morgan picked Elizabeth, easily one of the most popular leaders, but ended up having to choose between Mongolia and France (ironically enough). I personally think that France was the better choice, but not by much.

So, a few thoughts before I have to go:

*Mr. Nice Guy + Shoot the Moon: Pacal II of Carthage. A reasonably strong leader in his own right, plus Carthage which can be pretty powerful in the right situations. TT mentioned lots of water and/or Horses available. The Numidian Cavalry is a pretty powerful unit (Horse Archer that's essentially immune to Spearmen, with +50% vs. Melee units), and the Cothon adds trade routes to the city it is built in. The presence of rivers will also empower the Financial trait.

I think that this can be a dangerous combination depending on the layout. Worst-case, they can use their Expansive trait to help rapidly improve their cities, Financial to fund their empire, and send out waves of Numidian Cavalry to conquer their neighbors. If we started near them, I'd want to try and choke off their expansion, and do everything possible to keep Horses out of their hands. We wouldn't really have a good counter to those, aside from Spearmen. Of course, little water and no Horses would ruin their day.

*Dantski + Mukha: Willem van Oranje of Portugal. As TT said, lots of water is good for their Civ, otherwise, they'll have to rely on their Leader, which isn't a pushover. I would like to point out that I believe that the players voted for some amount of water on the map, so they may find a use for the Civ (like Carthage, too). Traits aren't geared for war, so I wouldn't expect high aggression from them, but I'm hoping not to start next to other Creative leaders.

Speaking of, there are 4 other Creative leaders. For some reason, I expect to start near at least one of them. In either case, I hope we can do some early expansion, plant our flag, and grab some territory.

I'll talk about more of the teams later.

Hopefully this will be an entertaining show for the lurkers. Oh, that reminds me, should we divide up any duties? For example, should we have one "face" for our team, diplomatically? One turn player? Me? Clearly, I'm the brains behind this outfit. smoke
