I'll be back later to actually post something. Note that I will be channeling Tokugawa and so you won't see much from me .
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

The diplo for this game has started already with Darrell and Yaz both reaching out to me ... Yaz for a 20turn NAP (not worth the paper it is written on as there will be zero way I could break it).
Darrell did ask me not to tell others that he had contacted him ... and Yaz said that he couldn't say who had contacted him when I asked. Well, that is an easy one to figure out ... Darrell contacted Yaz. My bet is that Darrell will not reach out to Krill as he is the Big Bad Wolf (BBW).
BTW - my diplo style in this game will be totally passive. People can talk to me, ask me things, even ask for open borders and tech trades ... I'll consider and do what is best for Japan. HOWEVER, I will not be initiating any contact with them. I played the first PBEM game saying I would be running a hybrid spy-economy and most people said they would be very interested to see how that worked (if at all).
Well - this game, I will be running a multi-player isolationist game ... lets see how that works out .
My start ...
Q: pop hut with warrior or let the city pop it. Is there any difference? Do I miss out on some options by using the city?

city would guarantee no barb invasion, but would prevent warrior potentially getting xp. think that's only real difference.

XP is like the worst hut benefit on an islands map, so I'd let the cap do the work.

I'm pretty sure that you can't get barbs that close to the capital if you only have one city. I think you have to be like 6-7 tiles away if you only have one city

I think this will be fun to watch. I have a soft-spot for Japan, and it will be interesting to see how your isolationist strategy pans out. I also have a thing for role playing, so yeah.
Seems like a pretty decent start that you have there, although a pre-Calendar resource would make it much better. Also, I guess something besides rice, but who am I kidding? The Japanese love their rice!

Popped the hut with the city. Got a map and was pissed ... until I saw that it revealed most of the Southern part of my island.

Ruff San,
Will there be a screenshot showing what the map revealed?

Seconded.
Also, would "Ruff-dono" be more appropriate, considering that he's the ruler of the whole empire?

I have to run.
