New assignment

Hi,

I suffer from some bad luck at the moment - after being sick twice already this year, I now have a painful neck/shoulder injury. My doctor told me not to use the computer for some time, especially not the keyboard. But since I had to disobey him today anyway to sort out some stuff over the internet, I can post my ideas for the next assignment here as well. wink

As some kind of follow-up to "memory lane", I had thought about,

"Change"

This could be one picture, but it would also lend itself nicely to a series of pictures.

If this is too abstract or too close to the theme of the last assignment for you, an alternative proposal would be "At Night".

I'd also suggest to set the deadline to the end of March - this feels more natural than the middle of the month (I think Smegged might agree with me here lol ), and should hopefully give people enough time.

What do you think? I will mostly stay away from the computer during the next days, but will try to participate in this discussion at least. And yes, I still intend to post a picture about "memory lane", however late this might be. rolleye

Change would make a great assignment.

It's opened to many interpretations and possibilities. One may want to show the changing of seasons, a time lapse photo of flower bloom, money, lifestyle, even a car changing lane, or a person at a crossroad....

Okay with me to move the deadlines to the end of months ;p

PS: hope you get better and soon!

I didn't take this one, so it wouldn't count. But, since it is just on the other side of the point from my cottage, this qualifies as Change.

I have a series of photographs that I take much pleasure in reviewing. I have taken a photograph of my children sitting on a specific rock on the shore of Lake Huron every year sometime in August. It started with my first-born perched rather precariously there at the age of 11 months, and we have faithfully taken another series of pictures there every year since. (Of course, some years we have been luckier than others in the quality of the pictures and the compliance factor in the subjects. wink )

The original notion was to have a record of the children's growth each year, taken at a place we love. However, it also has turned out to be a record of the annual changes in the water level of the lake. The first photograph happened to be taken in the year of the highest recorded levels of the lake since such records have been kept (they started recording this information in 1917). That year, the water was washing his little bum as he sat there. It has covered a year in which the water level matched two of the lowest recorded levels ever - 2001, which was as low as 1933 and 1964. We had to boost the younger kids to get them up to 'the spot' for that photograph.

I have learned to much enjoy the variation in the water level. Each year, the waterfront is a different place, as even a few inches in water level can make a big change in how much beach we have and, more importantly, what sorts of vegetation and wildlife will be there. In most places, one has the changing seasons to observe and enjoy, but I have had the added benefit of being able to observe a waterfront that has also changed yearly.

There is a set of photos that I wish I had taken while in college of College Walk at Columbia in the different seasons. Winter, the rows of trees have snow on them and little white christmas lights. In spring, the cherry trees bloom pink and so beautiful. In summer, dark green leaves, golden sunlight filtering through. In fall, changing colors, falling leaves...

I imagine those four panels on the wall in my house someday, but I'm not in NYC often enough to take the pictures that I want.

They would all be taken from the same spot, same angle, same everything, to enhance the changes of the trees.

I am stuck. I had a few intangible ideas which I discarded almost as soon as I thought of them... What are you guys working on with this topic? Any ideas I can steal?

I am kind of stuck too.

Ideas that did pop into my head:
- the growth of a bean sprout (meh, more like a scientific experiement than a good photo to me).
- growth from larva to butterfly (meh, see above).
- changes of moon position in one night (meh, too battery draining and weather condition dependent, British weather is just bad most of the time).
- close up of coins (twisted interpretation - may work on this but will be just another close up shot).
- double exposure of willing model in two different attire, or hair style, or before/after shave, etc. (no idea where to get willing model and I am not good with people).
- four different shots of the season of a same scene (needs a year, not a month...).
- infant to child to adult (need years, and the thingy about me and people).
- random ideas of shooting the "before and after" of things.

EDIT: oh, and very likely I am NOT going to be involve this month, just really busy with real life, likely to miss the GW beta weekend too. frown

What about 'money, lifestyle, even a car changing lane, or a person at a crossroad...'? tongue

Seriously, I want to try something I wanted to do for some time now: We have a great view over the river Rhine from our appartment, and I want to make a series of photos of that view on different times of day (dawn, sunset, night most probably). I'm admiring this change every day, during breakfast, lunch, and when going out onto the balcony for some fresh air in the night before going to sleep, and hopefully I'll be able to catch a change of weather in the process as well. (It's nice to watch it rain on the other side of the river while it's dry here... smile ) But I guess I need some extra luck for that to happen. Also, inexperienced with photography as I am, I fear it might not look so good on a photo as it does in reality, but we'll see.

I haven't made up my mind what to do instead if this won't work...

Change is a great subject, no doubt. I think my problem is I am trying to make something meaningful yet esthetic, and feeling a little pressed for time. But, I will get something before deadline [Image: nod.gif]

In 1985, computing history was being changed by the introduction of a new computer called the Amiga. I was ready to lay out some cold hard cash for a Mac in 1984, fortunately, I saw an Amiga pre-release advertisement while I was reading a magazine waiting for the salesman. Just look at the specs of this machine!

Preemptive Multi Tasking
4096 color display
Speech Synthesizer
Stereo
NTSC/PAL compatible
Video and stereo out
256K memory
All these plus more for one third the price of a black and white Mac. (Though, I would have gladly paid more than what a Mac cost). The specs were absolutely awesome for the time period; it took IBM and clones almost a decade to catch up to what the Amiga can do in 1985. It was not until the Pentium II generation that a Wintel box can measure up to the computing capability of an Amiga.<o =""></o>

I finally got my hands on an Amiga 6 months later, and although I didn’t know it at the time, the course of my life had changed, for better or worse… In a few years after my first Amiga, I gave up a lucrative business and pursuit a career using computers - doing DTP, multi media (presentations & kiosk), video production and television advertising, 3D graphics and virtual reality.

I have almost forgotten this little animation I made some 14-15 years ago. It may not seem much nowadays, but it represented a big break thru in computer graphics. Brought to the masses by the movie Terminator II 1991, “Morphing” was all the hype in 1990. (Rumor has it that the morphing sequences was done using Amigas) IMO, T2 was the movie that propelled the CGI era in movies.<o =""></o>

Anyway, I thought this little morphing animation, though not new material, fits the theme of this month’s assignment perfectly. (at least that's not the only submission I have for this month <o =""></o>[Image: tongue.gif])

The original still lives in my Amiga. I dropped a lot of frames with this version because it was used for a web page back in the dark ages of the net. The 3 little KoPs were 1-5 years old.
