Haha, that's a joke from my real life. There's a guy at work who has a bad habit of "reply to all" or "send to all". Today's e-mail was particularly amusing. Not just the e-mail itself, which was typically blunt and narcissistic, but the timing. I had just finished using him as an example for my assistant: "do not do what this guy does". And then the guy goes and sends his e-mail to prove my point.

Anyway, today was kind of a wine day. On my way home from work, I picked up a bottle. I was about to text a picture of the bottle to my boss with the caption "that kind of a day" when the lady behind me in line (who was also buying wine) beat me to the punch: "looks like I wasn't the only one with that kind of day", she said.

I said yep. What a concept, I could use a little fuel myself and we could all use some change.

So, now that I have that out of the way, I can't believe we're about to start PBEM19. Having read this forum for 5 years now, it's crazy to believe that the land of the Epics and Adventures has evolved to a thriving community for LOL, WW, and MP Civ.

About this game specifically, this will be my first experience for a couple of things. I have never played on Quick speed before, and have never played a PBEM before. The tech stuff for PB3 was pretty simple, though, and from the sounds of it PBEMs are pretty simple also, so I don't expect any technical issues. I am a little nervous about the transition from Normal to Quick. That said, I had never played Normal prior to PB3, and I haven't looked back to Epic since then, so this might not be that big of a challenge.

I did let the speed influence my choice of leader, however. Given that a combination of FIN/EXP/CRE was banned, for this game, I chose to go with Hatshepsut (CRE/SPI) with the first pick. I don't believe this is the "obvious" first pick (that should fall to Mansa), but it should work well for me. At quick speed, hammers and commerce are less important compared to normal speed, because techs, units, and buildings cost less. So I would tend to downgrade the power of financial. Conversely, there are fewer turns to the game, so a missed turn here or there can cause me more grief. So I upgrade the power of SPIRITUAL. I've always been a fan of CREATIVE. The flexibility it offers is huge. I think that's the big thing about this pairing - spiritual gives me flexibility and so does creative, and my goal is to leverage that as best as I can.

So, in order to keep the first few days interesting, I will save my "analysis" of the opposing leader/civ choices for after the game starts up. Plus, then I can use my limited map knowledge to influence what I have to say about the other teams.

In the meanwhile, a brief synopsis of what I expect to get out of this game...

Yep, not playing to win, not playing to finish 2nd/3rd/4th/5th. I know that I don't have enough free time to do any (good) C&D. I do, however, have enough time to play turns, report on turns, and shoot back and forth the occasional conversation. I won't do much copy-pasting of conversations into the thread. Rather, I'll share my behind-the-scenes thoughts here for posterity. That, I think, is the nice thing about playing in the 19th PBEM. There is an RB tradition, but I'm not breaking any new ground, so I don't feel the pressure to over-perform.

I also haven't played a game of Civ in almost a year! So I'm sure that rusty as I am, there will be plenty of smoke

What else should I talk about?
