[SPOILERS] - If you were a shape, what shape would you be? Mapmakers Thread

I'll post some thoughts once I know the picks from all the players. I'm not going to start the map before I have who is who and the turn order as I'm not clever enough to edit it all once the map is done. :neenernee
Time zone info: cromagnumpi 6-9pm EST xenin 7-11pm GMT tholal "CST, after cromag" nabaxo 4-12pm CET yell0w 9am-2am CET TheArchduke "CET" Provisional order: Cromag Tholal yell0w nabaxo TheArchduke xenin Yell0w to go 1st Yell0w: garrim gyr of the luchiurp nabaxo: Varn Gossam of the Malakim Xenin: capria of the bannor Tholal: Enion of the Elohim Cromagnumpi: Tebryn of the Sheaim TheArchduke: tasunke of the hippus
I'd be a triangle!
![]() The only general thought I have for you is that the maps which seem to get the least complaining are those that are lush and large. I'm sure I'll have specific comments once you've got something on resources and balance and whatnot. But I'd start off with a Large map, with a script that's fairly green, if I were in your shoes. Also - no matter what you do, there will be complaining. You could give someone 20 tiles of grass floodplains incense, and they'll object that they should have had gold and some hammers ![]()

I agree with the lush Mardoc, not with the large. Of course it should not be EASILY possible to rush everyone but on the other hand it should also not be completely non-viable to rush anyone at all. Having to build early defenders is part of the strategic decisions you have to do and taking it away in favor of having everyone being "rush-protected" and playing a farmers gambit doesn't seem the best way imo.
Anyway, I think I can help you with the editing of the civs later on if you would like to start on the map already now SL, but I don't think it is worth it to start now if 2 players haven't even checked the thread enough to notice that they still need to send you their picks. Maybe I'm overreacting to PBEM XI. I got a lot of complaints there, though. Complaints I don't think I'd have gotten if I used a Standard size instead of Small size script, but otherwise balanced the same. I'm not pushing for Huge, here, just a bit bigger than average for the number of players. Which, for 6, I'd tend to think is Large. If you really want to make rushes viable - make copper painful to grab. The bronze warrior defends really really well. Mardoc Wrote:Anyone want to bet on whether this game finishes? I think they may be better off with 5 players tbh. ![]() I will be making the map fairly lush and I am leaning on going for a pangea rather than any other map script. The map will be fairly big so that there is enough of a barb influence and people will be able to expand, however. I plan on starting people moderately close with room in their back lines rather than between one another. Here are the picks so far: nabaxo: 1. Var Gossam of the Malakim 2. Amelanchier of Ljosalfar 3. Cassiel of Grigori Xenin: 1) rhoanna 2) capria 3) varn Tholal: 1) Enion of the Elohim 2) Faeryl of the Svarts 3) Arturus of the Khazad Cromagnumpi: 1) Tebryn of the Sheaim 2) Rhoanna of Hippus 3) Faeryl Viconia of Svartalfar TheArchduke: I would like to take the Luichurp under Garrim Gyr or the Hippus under Tatsunke So, looks like everyone is going to get their 1st pick so far!
Hmm, some interesting choices there. This is the nicest part of getting new blood at RB, they don't share our conventional wisdom. I'd still bet on nabaxo or xenin, though. Maybe one of the others will prove me wrong.
The good news from a mapmaker perspective is that so far there's only one special requirement, the Luchiurp. And you know all about that!

Calabi-Yau, naturally.
![]() Yeah, this lineup does not fill me with hope here. On the plus side, nobody picked an obvious stinker either...so are you going to arrange the players in a star-like pattern with each getting a big backline to themselves but a close (hopefully choke-pointed) border with one another?
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.
I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out. Commodore Wrote:Calabi-Yau, naturally. ![]() almost exactly! Hardcore paint skillz: ![]() - Middle will be mountains and swamp and not too desirable to settle however there won't be much of it and so players wanting to rush should be able to. - Yellow area is going to be commerce rich and the rest of the land will be ok in not totally awesome. - Mountains will extend as spokes but not that far - aggression around the ends of these spokes will be pretty easy and available early. - I intend on making capitals good hammer cities and not good for commerce. Incentive to settle for commerce. - I don't plan on adding any barbs or wierd features. - I will place some of the unique features - I'll be looking for some advice on these actually. I quite like to idea of Bradelines well being at the centre of the map. I haven't really had any further thoughts but if there is anything anyone wants to add; I'm a wet corn. |
