Ronald's Adventure 57

Iberian Imperialism:

Scoring: Your task is to settle the new world, and conquer the barbarian civilization there. Note: A wonder does not count for score if rushed with a Great Engineer or cash.

10 points - Each barbarian city captured
10 points - Each barbarian city held until the end of the game
100 points - Build Versailles
300 points - Build Versailles in the new world
100 points - Build the Forbidden Palace in the new world
50 points - Each World Wonder built in the new world
50 points - Build the Colossus
150 points - Earn the circumnavigation movement bonus
400 points - Fastest circumnavigation among competing players (200 for second-fastest)
400 points - Fastest to own a city in the new world (200 for second-fastest). This counts as long as you don't lose the city quickly.
600 points - Fastest to own all cities in the new world (400 for second-fastest). This counts even if another city appears later.
500 points - Win by Domination
50 points - Any other victory
0.2% - Bonus for each turn remaining at the point of your victory. Example: If you win on turn 300, there are 200 turns remaining, so add a 40% bonus to your total score.

1st part of report:

A lot of points are depending on circumnavigation, first city and 1st to conquer. So getting very fast to optics and the Navigation is crucial.

The limitation, that we are not allowed to capture any city on our home continent forces us to expand as quickly as possible too. So it is rexing and teching fast.

We do have a very nice capital to start with:

Fastest paths to Astronomy can be bulbed.
The best way I think is this:
Oracle MC, immediately put down a forge and run an engineer. This will give about 60% chance to get a Great Engineer and not a Great Prophet. With the GE machinery can be bulbed.

Set up 3 cities with libraries and run 2 scientists in each:
1st scientist to bulb optics, 2nd and 3rd to bulb Astronomy
or use 1 scientist for an academy, bulb optics and partially bulb astronomy

Since we oracle MC, building the Colossus should be no problem whenever we want.

Let's have a look how it went:

Oracle came in in 1600 BC

and an forge was built very quickly afterwards (chops + whip)

This is a look at my empire at 1000 BC:

We have now 5 cities:
Lisbon is running an engineer and hopefully give birth to a GE soon.
Porto has already built a library, is running 2 scientist to bulb optics. It will then become my Moai city.
Coimbra will whip the library soon and will become fully cottaged
Braga is my third library city and until the GS is made it is almost useless, then it will become a good production city.
Amari will be my major production city and will get Heroic Epic

2nd part of report:

Next part of the plan is done:

A GE is born in Lisbon, and I can bulb machinery:

in 175 BC it is one turn to research compass, it is also 1 turn from getting the 1st GS to bulb immediately optics and 2 prebuilds for the carracks are in about to be built:

In 1 AD the first carrack reached the north of the New World. in the small screen the other two more carracks can be seen: the first going east and the second going west on a southern route

Finally, in 325 AD circumnavigation has been achieved. I don't have a screenshot with the actual message, but on this picture one can clearly see that the carrack now has 4 movement points. Also the small picture shows that it has been done.

After one bulb for Astronomy and researching the remaining bit by hand a settler and two archers (immediately promoted to longbows) have reached the dangerous shores of the New World. The proud Portuguese named this settlement New Lisbon and it started out as a fur trading station

3rd part of report:

The first few hundred years were quite tough for the new colony:

But 2 forified Longbows on a hill, in the meantime promoted to 3 times city defense are almost impossible to kill.

In the meantime back home, the preparation for the invasion of the New World started with a well developed empire:

And finally in 1120 AD the first city was conquered:

Why did we take this city first? There were two other cities which would have been much closer to the home continent. Well, our evil mapmaker didn't want us to:

4th part of report:

The rest was just conquering.
Warfare against barbs has one big advantage: No war weariness
Warfare against barbs has one big disadvantage: No Great Generals, so no super healers
The big continent and the many cities took quite a while and probably I could have speed it up by going the mounted unit route, but I started with maces and cats, rifles and trebs , then cannons and finally infantry. So it took me until 1585 AD until all 36 cities in the New World were conquered:

After that it was back to our home continent and there I did not know and did not take the time to calculate what was better:
Fast conquest and less wonders in the new world or leisurely conquest and as many wonders in the new world as possible.
Just for fun I took the later route and finally got above the domination limit in 1812 by crushing Isabella with bombers and tanks:

It was a fun game, I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to Qgqqqqq and T-hawk. Now I am curious how I did compared to everybody else.

I didn't do that! I placed one archer per barb city. I can only guess that all those loose barb units ended up there because they were trying to reach the closest civilized city... never mind the ocean in the way. crazyeye

Good work. That one stack aside, I'm glad to see the barbarians performed as desired, strong enough to put up some resistance but not do something like run away in tech to mech infantry.

Nice game, Ronald. Too bad you didn't know about the troop/settler possibilities of the Carrack. This was the *perfect* event to take advantage of that.

I like the bulb of both Machinery and Optics...nice.

You wondered if mounted units were faster...well, I went that route, and everybody beat me in conquering the New World cry So I think you made the right call there.

I was surprised that no barb cities spawned on those island off the New World. I kept thinking...gotta fogbust there...gotta spawnbust there, but you made the right call.

Thanks for the report

Heh, even though you waited till Astro, you still tied my first city date.

Was there a fallback plan if the first GP came out as a Prophet?
