Inspired by the work on roads in the wikia, I started a new game to see if I could play on islands without using any ships.
Here's my challenge.
From my starting island I was able to open a tower coming out on a very small island in arcanus.
And yes, land is in sight and I do have the space to build the right road in myrran.
Except that I haven't been able to.
I have endurance, word of recall, and plane shift.
As yet I do not have waterwalking, flying, or windwalking.
I've tried to start from the tower and switch.
I've tried to start one tile before the tower and try to switch when the engineers passed the tower.
I've tried to cast plane shift just when they were passing the tower.
All to no avail.
My next try will be to recall to the new village on the island (which is not a hamlet yet).
Can it be done?

Could you upload the save? I'll then try it. It seems definitely possible with one Plane Shift or Word of Recall and one Tower build. The thing is: there's enough place to build in two builds, not in only one. Or in three - I'm bad at getting the tiles' exact matchin positions. Anyway, you don't need water walk for WoR.

I've uploaded the save game here.

Here, I've started the building. It only required one build, even from the tower, so no mana wasted. Hope I did not mess your plans up with my actions for these two turns.

Thanks! ... but how?
I also tried including a side unit, but that did not help either.

If we could contact in some kind of live chat, like Skype, IRC, I'd bet I could explain better. The main point is, when Engineer unit moves off the tower, your view should be on the plane you want to have a road at (Arcanus). I also used up two engies for the order, while you could do the same with only one, and let the other engineer do some other thing.
The wiki has chat, too, but it's a little laggy.

Hmm, they built for 1 turn without any road showing, and on the second tile they stopped building.
Wait! Let me check if perhaps kyrub fixed the road exploit in insecticide 1.40n.
I'll retry in vanilla.
EDIT: Yep. Now it works without a glitch. Just ending the turn on arcanus seemed to do the job.
Hmm. I guess I just verified kyrub did a really good job.
Pity though for my scenario.

He did not recall he fixed it. They would've stopped builing usually if they lack enough building capacity, though that's definitely not the cause.
It could be some other issue side-effect. It should be tried at Insecticide to try building with engineers who have baseline building speed, not equal to 2 or more.
Or that may have been his "optimization" of the code, so he messed up with properties of water tiles.
You could build roads in vanilla then switch to Insecticide.
OR! With "stop building" issues Plane Shift can be used to build tile-by-tile, it should work, albeit expensive.

Well, I just redid it.
After building a tile of road in vanilla successfully, I transferred the save game back to insecticide 1.40n.
And again they moved forward 1 tile without building and then stopped.

Try Plane Shift tile-by-tile then. Must be side effect of some fixings, sheer luck of them fixers.
