opening saves directly from email

as people might be aware i've recently gotten a new computer after i've crashed the previous one (insurence gave the 'as-new' price for the crashed to buy a new) and have a minor issue with it that i don't quite understand ...

Usually when i'm playing PBEM's I'm able to open the saves directly from the mail, with it loading the save ... now on my new one (with Windows 8 banghead) don't get further than the opening menu wanting me to manually find the save on the computer and load it ... anyone have half a clue how to fix this so i can open the saves directly without jumping hoops?

You don't say if you've got the steam version of BTS, but regardless, it could perhaps be resolved in a similar manner as this:

I.e. by creating a wrapper script that launches BTS and associating saved game files with that script.
If you know what I mean.

I cp'ed my version via a usb stick, and its not a part of steam

Right, but it sounds like you have the same underlying problem that there is no proper file association for .Civ4BeyondSwordSave files, which makes sense if you just copied it in instead of running an installer.

So you could fix that by creating a civ4bts.bat file containing:

"%~dp0\Civ4BeyondSword.exe" /fxsload=\"%1\"

Saving that file to the same folder as your Civ4BeyondSword.exe file, and using Open with... to associate all .Civ4BeyondSwordSave files with civ4bts.bat.
If you know what I mean.

well ... the file is named Civ4BeyondSword.exe and not Civ4BeyondTheSword.exe but ... it still won't load the actual save

In that case I am out of suggestions. (Did you include the double quotes as well? They're important.)

direct copypaste from your code into the .bat

I don't know how badly ms have botched win 8. Is it possible to right-click a save file and choose open with and set civ as default or isn't that the problem?

If not you could put a shortcut to your PBEM folder somewhere so its easy to drop saves in it...

thats the easy part ... the issue is that it 'stalls' in the ingame main menu as if you just opened the game normally, instead of loading the save, leaving you having to use the ingame loading mechanism to load it

Maybe you should try running the Civ installer on your new computer.
I have to run.
