A new town building/magagement game named Banished was just released. I haven't had the chance to play it yet though, but it intrigues me a great deal and I will happily pick it up once it goes on sale.

I think I'll buy it and give it a go. I read a bit about this game some time ago and it got me interested. I can give a report later, if people want to hear more opinions before buying it.

It will be much better once they release steamworks so someone can add military/zombies. DF is so good because the game goes from passively trying to kill you with your own newbness to trying to actively murder you.

I bought the game, it is pretty good other than weird bugs (if you guys get cold/hungry during the initial setup, they'll take everything out of your stock pile and refuse to do useful work). I discovered that the rate at which you can build stone houses is about the same rate as it is safe to expand the population safely. The main trick to this game seems to be watching your expansion. If you expand too quickly, you won't be able to see the feedback from the new pop before soon enough to do anything about it. If you expand too fast, your food will tank a few seasons later and you're liable to lose 1/2 your pop from starvation and cold effects.
