Official Pitboss Fix For Steam Civ IV

2K David Wrote:Hi all, thanks for providing feedback on Direct IP multiplayer. We've decided to put up the pre-Steamworks version of Civilization IV (+ expansions) on Steam as an optional "Beta" download, which should allow Direct IP games to continue for those who want to play this way. We've posted some instructions on how to access this version of the game on our Knowledge Base. Hope this helps!

How to change back to the old, pitboss-friendly version of Civ IV on steam: http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/...d-on-Steam

Summary: in the properties of your Civ IV BTS, opt into the "original_release_unsupported" beta. I've tried it myself - just a few clicks and it works. For those who are using a manually fixed steam version, I recommend doing it this official way now. It means you won't trigger the "wrong assets" warnings anymore and there's a lower chance that something we don't know about will be screwed up.

I guess it was a bit of bumbling on their part, but overall good customer service in the end. I am personally impressed that they put out a fix so quickly. It only took 1 week, and that week was E3.

I never thought I'd feel love for 2K, but the day is here!

I agree, this is merely acceptable customer service by most standards, but quite good indeed for a legacy PC game.

Clarification though since I don't have a Steam copy and haven't yet requested by copy by way of 'game disk email,' is this an either-or deal where you can still only have one version of the game installed? Or does your Steam library then show two copies of the game and you can launch them interchangeably? Or something else...?

I haven't tried it yet but you should be able to switch between installed versions by reversing the change and receiving the steam official version again, that would be my expectation. Kind of a PitA, but whatever.

Other games on Steam have betas as standalone, so you should be able to swap between versions easily.

Well, IIUC the "fix" is simply Civ4 sans the MP-breaking patch. So I'm not all that impressed. tongue

It's still nice to have it available.
