[Spoilers] I'm a Lurker and What is This: Lurking Thread

I don't know anything about this game, I just saw a hole and decided to fill it. I do that a lot! Ask your moms for more details.

I don't even know who's playing and I'm commenting in the lurker thread.

Elimist will win.

EDIT: Totally thought this was an EITB game.

It's kind of like that one...or two...or three...game(s) with Serdoa and a field of newbies. Except it's Gawdzak not(?) Serdoa.

Well, here's the first cut. It ain't super-balanced yet, just a general look of the land:

I'm just looking at this game for the first time and, like, Gawdzak's combo pick is at least two whole tiers over the others? This game's gonna shake, rattle, and roll, that's for sure.

Well, I don't hate Khan's or TT's...India is really really good although I think DuGaulle is doubling down on the wrong kinds of things, while Financial is never wrong in baseline BtS (although Vikcy was a loads better choice). Zero defending that FDR wiff, though. frown

Hey, it's just like PBEM 66, only here I can lurk the other threads. cool

Of the starting picks, I think I like Khan/LogicalTautology's choice less than Commodore. It strikes me as a combo that looks good on paper, in light of the point system, but is really poorly suited to the reality of the game:

When I see this start, I see three Work Boats, a Lighthouse, and three expensive techs in my immediate future. On normal speed (I've played Quick all of... never) hooking up the seafood would cost 90H, with a further 60H needed for the Lighthouse. It's going to be a real grind to balance the capital's growth with expansion. Why make things even harder by adding Stonehenge to the initial list of necessary builds? Moreover, pre-Lighthouse Ocean Clams are pretty mediocre tiles... unless you are Financial, in which case the extra commerce is a huge deal. Here it provides earlier access to the Pigs, the strongest tile in the BFC, and earlier access to Sailing, for an additional 2–3 food once the Lighthouse can be built. Fast Workers/Stonehenge don't help much with either of these goals.

So, Vicky and a Mining civ. Whip/chop Work Boats into Settlers. Research Bronze Working ---> AH ---> Sailing. Expand and profit.

Meh. You don't want a lighthouse for a good long while, and one of those clams will take ages to hook up, anyway. You don't want to do a Commodore on the clam, but neither is there a terrific hurry to hook them. Sure, there's a bunch of priorities there - but the seafood isn't so high.

That being said...De Gaulle of India isn't fantastic, and I don't think Commodore was defending it anyway. The point is more that other things are worse.
