Time for our first mission! I believe everyone starts off with this for story reasons, but the layout might be procedurally generated?
Kill the enemies, plant the bomb.
Meet our first 4 squaddies! Kofi "Mustache Man" Bapela, Marina "Goggles Girl" Guseva, Lisa "I Peed My Pants" Adams, and Penny "First Off The Chopper" Gray.
We are screwed aren't we? If anyone survies they'll earn themselves a proper name.
I can see the bombing site, but there are two pods of enemies close to each other. If we engage from here, we'll be fighting both.
So instead we'll go back around and engage the left group from the road.
Starting it off with a frag grenade. It hits on a 3x3 radius so we could only get it to hit 2 of them.
Boom! First blood. We killed one, the other is gravely injured. It might have been good to overwatch with the other soldiers, but I wasn't sure if they would trigger on the enemy free turn?
Now it's time to clean up.
Mustache Man takes a shot at 47% and connects.
Penny misses her 46% shot.
It's all up to Lisa. 46% chance to hit, and a 66% chance to deal enough damage to kill it.
Beautiful. First engagement down and everyone's still kicking! We have promos on 3 soldiers too.
SHIT! I accidentally triggered the pod. Penny is in a bad place. WAY too close to the enemies in a half-cover. I brought her back to full cover behind the statue.
Now we have to start the fight and our units aren't in a great position (but not in huge danger either).
I was sure that this would be a flank but it wasn't. Took the shot and missed. Overwatched with the other soldiers as they only had around 25% chance to hit.
We killed one!
And we damage the other!
But he will now take a shot at us..
We dodged! Whew. She was in full cover so can't have been that high of a chance to hit.
The enemy commander ran to a better cover and overwatched.
I wanted to throw a frag at him, but we are one tile too far when standing behind the statue in full cover. If we run closer, we'll trigger the overwatch.
Goggles Girl flanked the other enemy and got the kill.
Then I did something really stupid.
I ran one of our units to a full cover, thinking the commander was too far to take a shot at her. He wasn't.
She got hit for 3 damage.
Smelling blood, the commander left his cover. Our overwatch hit him for 5 damage, one less than what he has.
She was in full cover!! Damn. Just like that we lose our first soldier. RIP our American friend Lisa Adams.
And so it begins.. Our worst enemy, panic. He panicked and ran right towards the commander. This is dangerous.
Next turn we had a 44% shot with Penny, but I didn't want to risk it. Instead I threw a frag grenade for a guaranteed kill.
In Enemy Unknown there was a mechanic where you got less loot if you bombed an enemy. That's probably still in play. I had to turn off the tutorial in order to toggle on Ironman mode
We looted a Hair Trigger from one of the dead enemies. Loot drops in a 3x3 grid around the dead body and you have a limited amount of turns to grab it before it self-destructs.
We planted the bomb and to my surprise no more enemies spawned.
After promoting we got a Ranger, a Grenadier and a Specialist. Missed out on
a Medic a Sharpshooter (according to a quick google search).
I will rename units next turn. I think I'll do the management stuff and 1 mission per report.
