TheArchduke ADV4 early culture or how Mrs von Bingen explored the world

As a side note. I was not sure if I post this report at all. Maybe I should not post an incomplete win or loss like with epic 1, if I get shit because of it, but ah well.

Yeah, Mrs von Bingen, it seems our particular skills are of no use in the current market?

How there are plenty of holy districts in Spain or in the Aztec Empire.

Were, Mrs von Bingen, were.

Well what else can I do?

Well, it seems barbarians have a particular aversion to Great Persons, how do you like polar exploration?

In any case, this was a fun variant. I managed 61 GP, because I won in 217 thanks to culture victory, which disappointed me a bit from Germany´s end.
Notable stuff, Von Bingen was a polar explorer.
I seriously run out of places to store that Great Works into.

I was at about 120 GM, 90 GE and 100 GW points at the end.

Turn 1

On a hunch I settle 1 tile west, another city can have the chocolate, I prefer to get a 2nd 2 hammer tile.

Turn 8

Astrology boost from a hut. Stockholm scouted as a 2nd.

Turn 11

Superjackpot, a relic as Kongo!

Turn 17

Going 1w was a mistake, as 2 city states are super nearby.

Turn 18

Even without Prophets, I think I am going Divine Spark

Turn 23

First settler built, starting on a campus district.

Turn 33

Normally I delay Classical age, but I want commercial districs asap.

Turn 38

Norway is not doing enough damage to endanger me, I will probably counterattack and try to take his capital

Turn 42

For a bit of cash I buy the relic of the Aztecs, got 2 now.

Turn 43

Commercial district online.

Turn 44

Campus online in my 3rd city. Settler there, a quick chariot for a CS and the war for NOrway and then a settler for a 4th.

Turn 46

3 slingers into archers, add 2 warriors off we go.

Turn 48

After sniping a barbarian camp with my scout, I snatch a settler lost to barbarians by the Aztecs. Nice.

Turn 50

Luckily Scarsborg lost its religious district, so I can keep it.

Turn 54

I loose my chariot to the city wall in Nidaros, I will continue though

Turn 60

With my Chariot still, it would be mine, catching a settler though.

Turn 67

One more lost warrior and on a razor´s edge I conquer Nidaros with my 3 archers and 1 warrior

I get double dowed by Monty and Philipp, that could become dicey.

I finish the Oracle, I go for theatre over industrial because I want to get a beat on those GPs.

Great Merchant +12,9

India goes for one theatre square, so I am behind 2 points over there. Need to quicken up with those.

Turn 87

I exchange diplomatic league for literary tradition to mitigate India´s quickness a bit. Another GS 3

Turn 92

Turn 217

I win by culture because I stored to many works in my theatre squares. I probably could have milked a lot more GPs..
Reply

Well Sullla didn't ban city-gifting in this game so you could have rescued the situation still when you saw the problem (obviously just not using the GPs are better).

This game would have been easily first place (so far) so you didn't do that bad. smile
Reply

Well, you can dominate the GPs more easily especially if you go conquering and I do think that with the starting position conquest was necessary to get at least the Great Admiral situation under control.

I do dislike artifical weakening my play for milking points though, I was already way too lenient with my city building 5-6 more were possible or outright conquest.

How useful was Oracle?  You had a lot of faith stored at end, no patronage with it?
Reply

To be honest, at about turn 150 this was in the bag. I patronaged a bit with money and democracy in the end. Also the end of the game suprised me I wanted to recruit some more GPs in the end.:D
