5th PB - I am becoming the new Superdeath!
Not very many pre-game thoughts, especially not at this time of night.

You just wait.

Go worker-settler and chop it out at size 1.

Surprised you put my username on the thread title, frankly. Now I feel psychologically attached to this game. Hopefully I can be a good Buddhist and appreciate the beauty of this game without becoming attached to it, as attachment leads to suffering.
Organizationally, how are we hoping to communicate? Over forum, or with some chat service? How much authority do I have to spam this thread with strange thoughts?
I suppose now it's time to take stock of the situation.
Ourselves:
Well, I don't know much about you, sadly. I'll need to look at the games you played on the PB list. I mostly know you from winning PB44, though I didn't sink deep into the weeds of your analysis.
Anyway, last game I played was on base BTS back in PBEM 54, so definitely will need time to be brought up to speed. I'm a consummate builder, have a cautious personality, bad micro, and a habit of micromanaging cottage growth and whipping. Have a habit of overvaluing commerce and undervaluing hammers/military. Also am definitely weak in the military side of the game. My idea of war is one of attrition, not a giant cavalry deathstack, and am a complete novice in regard to naval tactics.
Our Rivals:
No idea re: Raskolnikov or TBW. Haven't been looking at previous games too closely, but Gavagai seems extremely scary, Mr. Cairo seems to be cautious, doing good but not great, and superdeath is known for his early aggression, which may be an unfair judgment. I don't know.
The Mod:
No idea.
The Game Settings:
Are we still doing Pangaea? How have the mod's naval/whipping changes changed the balance of warfare from base BTS? (Not even sure exactly how the new navies work...)
Will definitely need to see how the tech trading quotas work.
Treaties and Cultural Norms:
Here's an important question: how many other diplomacy games do we think will be held here at Realms Beyond? Last diplo game I played was the intrasite metagame (hi Cornflakes), which turned into a NAP-fest and a nap-fest. Game theory dictates that if we think that this will be the last diplo game played on the site, we should be more willing to break treaties, since there won't be any chance for the other players in the metagame to retaliate.
I often think of how Sullla's PB2 report really set the diplomatic culture of RB to one of imagined aggressive retaliation/MAD. I haven't played Diplomacy, but my understanding of the game's culture is that people will backstab each other, and that's an expected part of the gameplay. Here, it seems almost sacrosanct to break a treaty, even though it's just a piece of paper, because of the shared expectation that the other players will punish those who break treaties.
Of course, just by saying that, I've made it so that any future competitors will be less willing to trust me... oh well.
Intertemporal Exchange:
Diplomacy, and the fact that we can trade non-military units means that we have a limited ability to convert the various currencies in the game (hammers, gold, food) into each other, and more interestingly, through time. I will use the subscripts _0 and _1 to represent now and later.
Gold_0 <-> Hammers_0: Selling non-combat units for Gold, post-Currency.
Hammers_0 <-> Beakers_0: Extorting techs/selling techs for peace.
Hammers_0 <-> Hammers_1: Selling workers/settlers with the understanding of receiving them back later.
Though frankly this will probably not happen much due to the unenforceability of contracts in this game.
What is the rule for enforced peace? If I trade 200 gold for 30 gpt for 10 turns, does that create enforced peace?
Micro Matters:
Anyone have a Civ 4 combat calculator recommendation, and a guide to setting up sandboxes? Sareln's calculator download link seems to have died with Dropbox.

So much to respond to
1. That was the intended effect of putting your name on it.
2. Spam the thread all you want, otherwise pm me. If you want, I can add you to my civ 4 discord, where I met Adler and Irismono, and where Alhazard reached out to get me onto RB...
3. Boak and I won pb45* (although, i did 90% of the heavy lifting). I think I am chronically bad a choosing a good civ/leader combo. I like to think I am a decent player, but honestly I have not seen too much commentary on my gameplay. The more I post and think, the better I do. I don't really play all that well on auto-pilot. If you want to see how I play, read my pb44/45 threads, 46/47 is probably not a good reflection...
That being said, I am more or less comfortable with military matters from hours upon hours of ladder experience, although more often than not, fast-clicking is what decides the games there. The naval changes Krill introduced in the most recent patch have taken some getting used to, even when compared to pb45. circumnavigations and harbors have become key. (Carthage??)
On the domestic side of things, I can plan out something really well - if I set a goal, I can accomplish it, but I think more often than not, I set the wrong goals (see 44, 46). I do have a predilection for wonders, it's really an addiction you can never kick. I do not have a problem with whipping my cities into the ground, and I will do it ruthlessly and efficiently. I mess up worker micro at times just because I play with a mouse and am often multi-tasking, alongside just poor planning - I should probably use the numpad more often... Frankly, it's hard to self-critique and self-analyze, and I'd relish some detailed commentary on my gameplay.
4. Spoilers for pb 46!!!! no players
Superdeath:
I expect this to be the game where he breaks the stereotype. As long as we don't present ourselves as too weak to him, he'll be a good friend. I think superdeath is the ghengis khan ai. I like the guy, so why not be friendly?
Threat: 6/10
Competence: ??? somewhere between 2 and 7.5 depending on the PB/his mood
Base Attitude: -1 (from -1 to 2).
Raskolnikov:
Who?
In all seriousness, this player played in PB3 - https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/show...267&page=4, and was lurking the forums back when diplo was a thing.
Base Attitude: 0 (from -1 to 2).
Mr. Cairo:
Indeed a cautious player who could've done damage to me in pb45 but decided to pursue a grudge war against MSCC.
Threat: 2/10
Competence: 8/10
Base Attitude: 2 (from -1 to 2).
Gavagai:
The only player I interacted with in pb44. He is prone to mistakes when he is bored, but otherwise plays a damn flawless game. He doesn't like the early game, but enjoys the late game much more. He is the only one I expect real cunning from.
Threat: 9/10
Competence: 9/10
Base Attitude: -1 (from -1 to 2).
5. Regarding diplo, I think that this game will evolve into a teamer game - 3v3 style, or maybe 2v2v2 or some combination.
6. Here's a combat calc:
http://zulan.net/civ/vodka/
I think I'll set up a sandbox.

Maybe for next pitboss I should do a full AI-player equivalency, even if it is... a bit out of taste.

Well, I'd like an invite to the Civ 4 discord, but probably as a back pocket thing for war turns or something. Don't usually respond well to instantaneous chat.
What makes you say you're bad at choosing a civ/leader combo? Not that I have any real idea what makes a 'good' combo...
Good to know whipping is still a thing to do in Krillmod. I have the impression workshops are more powerful in this mod?
Also, good to know you have a habit of overbuilding wonders, because I have a bad habit of underbuilding wonders. Hopefully it all balances out.
Any idea why these things evolve into teamer games vs. some sort of realpolitik balance of power things? Defender's advantage in civ? Tech trading?
Do you know how to use flying camera to figure out the map dimensions? Because I don't.
Also, if Rusten is dedlurking Raskol, their threat level shoots up.
What's the RB mapmaking meta like these days? Back when I played, the maps were pretty lush, so even though I had a bad habit of crashing the economy around Writing/Alphabet, 'cottage and pray' usually got me out of that. How silly is that strategy in today's metagame?
----------------------------
Any thoughts re: traits and civs? Very unfamiliar with the mod... how does Inca hold up?
I'm partial to France's fast draftable musketman and China's supercrossbows, but don't know if the meta/mod has changed anything.
