The
Realms Beyond is a community, not a clan, that are spreading across
the traditional lines of game title and who are like-minded on several
key points...
... to seek challenge and fun, not simply 'high score' or 'the most
elite stuff!'
... to excel is virtue
... to look to become friends with those you play with
... to treat others with respect, whether you agree with them or
not
... to steadfastly avoid cheating

A
big thanks to Lily LeGrim for posting the short story,
looking forward for more!
The
creature was getting close. Oh, how it delighted to
see it's prey trip and fall to the ground. Such an easy
catch and soon it was be upon it. These thoughts delighted
themselves in it's mind as it approached with even more
vigor as before.
Layer
One: Chase is the first installment in the Dual
Strike Chronicles. Enjoy!

Arty took a long pull of the warm ale in his mug, and leaned back against the bar. Gods, the stuff was awful! It seemed like the Searing must have permanently stunted the barley plants in Ascalon, adding insult to injury. It would be better cold, he thought. I really ought to spend some time working with a master of Water Magic. |

Something decidedly Odd was going on.
Sure, SoulFlayer had sent along some new recruits from the Realms Beyond guild to give Jill, Sanskirt and Ember a chance to rest and decompress. Arty had felt only slightly resentful that he had to stick around and show the newbies the ropes.
But it was strange that Tydus, acting like he had never seen any of them before, had given the team a message from the King for Ambassador Zain. In fact, Arty was pretty sure that it was the same message that he had delivered last week with his other comrades.
Nor was that the only strange happening. For instance, Necromancer Munne seemed to have lost the Holy Relic again. Arty dutifully joined in on retrieving it, but inside his mind was whirling. Time and again, people he had spoken to before, and even performed tasks for, treated them all like complete strangers.
Was it all part of some vast Conspiracy? For what purpose? Who was behind it?
Arty resolved to keep his mouth shut and his eyes open. |

“Do you remember it being like this?” Arty asked in a low voice.
His three companions shook their heads. “We all left before the Searing,” Jill said, “and I’ve not returned until now.” She shook her head sadly. “I knew things were bad, but how could they be this bad?”

The seasons were definitely turning toward the close of the year, Arty thought. Though the sun still warmed his bare skin, it was riding low in the sky, and soon would only show its face briefly each day in this northern clime. He lifted his head from his couch, glancing at his companions. “Our sunbathing schedule is going to have to be put on hiatus for the year, I think, in the near future.”
Sanskirt cracked open one eye. “Perhaps for you, O dabbler in mundane magic, but for me – never. You know that exposing myself to the divine rays is part of my worship. I shall continue to lie here, in holy contemplation, on the roof of our guild hall each and every day.” She paused. “Though perhaps short sessions of meditation will be in order as we approach Year’s End.”
From the couch on the other side of the monk, Jill muttered something that Arty couldn’t quite catch, though part of it sounded like “meditate while snoring.” Sanskirt started to sit up, clearly preparing to take umbrage, but at that moment all were distracted by the clicking of boot heels on the roof tiles. Ember, on Arty’s other side, sat up abruptly with a hissing intake of breath. Before the other three sunbathers could lever themselves up, the voice of SoulFlayer, their guild leader, shattered the peaceful afternoon.
“Realms Beyond recruits, ATTEN-SHUN!”
Arty almost flew off the couch in his haste to comply. Acutely aware of how out of uniform he was, he could feel his cheeks beginning to burn as his superior looked them all up and down.
SoulFlayer’s lip curled. “You’re in luck, recruits. I’ve got just the assignment for you, one that your…preferences…will fit nicely.” At the mystified look from the sunbathers, he continued, “I’ve just received an urgent message from Warmaster Tydus in Ascalon City. It seem’s he’s finally woken up to the fact that all the other, more mainstream, guilds are interested in is fighting each other, rather than pushing back the Charr. So now he’s asked me to send Realms Beyond’s finest. Well, you’re a mess, but you’re the best damn recruits I’ve got – and you’re going to prove to Tydus that ignoring Realms Beyond was a mistake!”
Arty exchanged a nervous glance with his companions. What was their guild leader going to get them into now? They had barely finished their basic training in their chosen professions! Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to start this sunworshipping club after all – it’s gotten us noticed.
SoulFlayer went on, to the increasing alarm of the four recruits, “You’re going to upstage them all! You’re going to go in there armed with nothing but your skills! Show them what real magical prowess is about! You’re going to go in there exactly as I see you before me now!”
What?! SoulFlayer couldn’t really be implying what it sounded like, could he?
Some of his shock and confusion must have shown in his face, because the guild leader went on, nodding, “Yes, you’re going to Ascalon City clad in nothing but your undergarments. Well, I guess you ought to wear our guild capes, though – just so everyone knows the identity of our illustrious – but unfairly ignored up till now – guild.”
Arty, Jill, Sanskirt and Ember could only stare at one another in horror.
