To Hell and Back
After a grateful townsfolk id of all our gear, we proceeded to some training session, to get our adventurers up to level 30 to face the challenges of Hell difficulty. We proceeded extremely cautiously and carefully due to the fact that in our previous major IM session, we lost it all during one such training session. (Note: for those interested -- Rogue was clevel 29 and doing Cats while Warrior was clevel 29 and had just popped into Caves for a peek. Warrior was swarmed under by at least ten Illusion Weavers right at the stairs. Rogue tried a rescue, but could never kill a Weaver before others began hitting her, allowing the one she was targeting to escape. Rogue tried to reach Caves Nine by clearing Cats 5-8, literally trying to run through the areas trying to find the stairs down, but lupped to clevel 30 on Cats 8. Game ends there, as once you reach clevel 30, you are not allowed to gain any more exp from training sessions/games. Rogue forced to leave game. This was EXTREMELY frustrating! The Rogue had BOTH CC and Holy Defender that game!)

 

9th Session, March 16th 03 -- Training in Nightmare Cats
Four games, each cleared Cats 5-8. We additionally cleared lvl 9 twice. Roede soloed a lot to catch up with Taoni experience-wise.

10th Session, March 18th 03 -- Training in Nightmare Cats
Two games, clearing Cats again. When we both reached lvl 30, we gathered our belongings and packed for the journey to Hell.

Roede carried over: splint mail of accuracy, diamond/lion breast plate, jade/wolf crown, ruby/tiger
gothic shield, mithril/blood long sword, lord's short sword, lord's spiked club, lightn/blood mornstar, master's sabre, meteoric lwb, dull staff HO(40), cobalt/perfection amulet, stars amulet, heaven ring,
perfection ring, dragons ring, steel ring, 12 empty spaces for scrolls Res and ID.

Taoni carried over her gear from Nightmare (see NM Diablo kill) plus short war bow of stars, ruby short war bow, and more secondary weapons for the warrior. We then entered a new (hell-diff) game and did our town business with 225K cash.

This time Wirt had something useful for both of us!

Wirt= SWB or Burning for 22.5K to Taoni, and SBB of Thunder (similar price) to Roede. We bought both!

Gris offered Taoni the following: 2h-Sword of Precision, 2H-sword of bashing, Blessed Full Plate of
the Giants ($121,401!), Crimson Mail of the Tiger, Axe of Vigor, and Mail of Lion. He offered crap to Roede.

We were a bit hesitant about that plate from Griswold. It cost a bunch of gold and its usefulness would drop rapidly soon enough(we thought the AC might be valid through Cats, with luck on foe draws). We could buy a lot of crappy items and see what Gris would replace them with using 121K worth of gold. We finally decided that the Plate was a "sure thing" while the others buys were not, and so we went for it!

We also bought some crap hoping Gris would replace with better: Shield of Wolf(6.5k), Bow of Sorcery(11.5k), Axe of Ages, Shield of Tiger. No dice. At this point, our cash was getting very low.

Adria: elix str, no ID and no Res! She did have an AA staff of Golem that we passed on. We repaired all bows and some swords Pepin: 32 large reds, two Res.

We girded for battle, brought in mules to carry out items we were saving for later, and got ready to dive into Hell.

 

11th Session, March 20th 2003
HELL CHURCH ONE: foes as usual. Drops: book Fbolt, elix str, 4 IDs, res, amulet. Shrines: Magical

We wanted the warr to get a head start, the rogue will catch up anyway. Roede soloed the lvl weilding his lightn/blood mornstar

HELL CHURCH TWO: Carver sw, Fallen sw, Devil Kin sp, Skel Capt. Drops: book Fbolt, elix vit, elix dex, elix str, ID, staff HB(47), Bladeskin= bastard sword, Butcher - book heal. Shrines: Religious, Eerie, Eerie

HELL CHURCH THREE: carver sp, Dark Ones sw, Devil Kin sw, Burn Dead Archers. Drops: book Fbolt, book TP, elix str, Leo - great helm. Shrines: Fascinating, Glimmering(!).

Roede soloed the entire level, parked Leo, and the guards were bowed down off screen.

HELL CHURCH FOUR: Rotting Carcass, Burn Dead Archers, Plague Eater, Horrors, Flesh Clan Archers. Drops: elix str, 2 elix mag, Blackash - hard leather. Shrines: Spooky, Creepy, Goat

Roede started the lvl solo and ran into an ambush by Blackash and friends still in the stair area. He made it though, at the expense of some reds, which always annoys him. Though Roede tried to solo as much as possible, the combination of layout (grates) and foes (skel + goat archers) made teamwork necessary more than once (read: freezing). Taoni obliged.

HELL CATS FIVE: Stone Clan Mace, Flesh Clan Mace, Burning Dead Archers, Shadow Beasts, Glooms. Drops: elix vit, elix str, elix dex, 3 ID, book TP, book Heal, book HB, short war bow, long battle bow, Foulwing = long bow. Shrines: Eldritch(Roede)/Fascinating(Taoni)

Normal, uneventful teamwork made foes seem "easy". Some desync like respawns in rooms, out of air appearance, skels with goat AI and such, but we worked through it without major problems.

HELL CATS SIX: Glooms, Overlords, Acid Beasts, Stone Clan Archers. Drops: book Lightn, chainmail, ring(barrel), Deathspit= comp staff, Bilefroth =cape, weaponrack= Gnarled Root (club). Shrines: Stone(Roede)/Glimmering(Taoni), Religious(Roede) /Magical(Taoni), Goat Shrine.

Teamwork. Desync here: Taoni saw goat archers while Roede fought overlords. Still, no sweat.

Taoni still lvl 30, Roede still lvl 31

HELL CATS SEVEN: Mud Men, Stone Goat Mace, Acid Beast, Familiars. Drops: elix str, Res, no weapons rack= axe. Shrines: Divine(Roede)/Magical(Taoni), Religious(Roede) /Abandoned(Taoni).

Some weird desync about foe types (sometimes they morphed in the doorframe), but we worked our way nonetheless. Roede was now using his "Lord's" weapons, til it was time for a round of "blood" usage again. Since we had a Glimmer and several ID scrolls, we ided Leo's earlier helm -- of moon +4 all. Not bad.

HELL CATS EIGHT: Familiars, Acid Beasts, Poison Spitters, Gargoyles. Drops: book Phasing, comp bow(chest), weaponrack= spiked club, Chaoshowler= gothic shield. Shrines: Spiritual.

Usual door teamwork. Boss pack was bowed down by the rogue, with Roede offscreen to avoid fatal desyncs. Roede used his Master's weapon from here onward.

Taoni still lvl 30, Roede still lvl 31; end of 11th session.

 

12th Session, April 1st 03
HELL CAVES NINE: Toad Demons, Poison Spitters, Frost Chargers. Drops: elix dex, elix str, Oozedrool= long battle bow

Four toads were waiting behind the first corner, but we managed to fight through that initial rumble (Roede had his King's scimitar ready). Once all foes were known and we had a good set, Roede could use the Master's sabre, switching to mithril/blood as needed. We worked our way most carefully from corner to corner. Oozedrool's gang could be bowed across a fence.

HELL CAVES TEN: Illusion Weavers, Pit Beasts, Blood Claws. Drops: breast plate, hunters bow, Goldblight= book HB.

Those weavers were bad news. Luckily we had a narrow path and a choke right at the stairs, so they didn't find us en masse and Roede could fend off the first assault. But sure enough, our scouting Taoni got caught by a band of weavers and a dog. Roede killed 6 weavers and a mutt before the scene stayed quiet and he could dare to res her. Second death of the day was desync related: a dog beamed direct next to her and killed her.

HELL CAVES ELEVEN: Red Storms, Storm riders. Drops: elix vit, warstaff, short war bow, long war bow.

Careful teamwork. Roede switching between Master's sabre and mithril/blood sword. Taoni using the bow of burning with good results. Thanks to the blood weapon, we still had a net gain of reds.

HELL CAVES TWELVE: Storm Lords, Flayed Ones, Lava Maws. Drops: breast plate, SWB.

Roede had no more usable AC, no more full block. If he geared for max resist, the block was lousy. If he went for block, he had zero resist. He tried the resist route first because of the dog spit, but a single storm cut his life to half in just one attack, so back to high dex/zero resist it was. Still, the Blessed Plate of the Giants we had purchased at the game start did yeoman work, going three full levels past where we thought its usefulness would end. A wise purchase after all!

Even with high dex, these fast attackers were a serious threat; we soon had a dead warrior to just two maws. Under their combined attack, he kept burning reds in the faint hope that the rogue would kill one of them before his belt was empty. Didn't work out, and the rogue had to fight/kill them both while running around. Taoni managed that though. We ided the breast plate drop - of the moon. Eh.

Both still lvl 31; end of 12th session.

 

13th Session, April 3rd 03
HELL HELL THIRTEEN: Maelstorms, Snow Witches, Lava Maws. Drops: elix vit, Res, cap, cap, claymore, falchion, staff MS, broad axe, quarter staff, studded leather, Witchmoon= long sword, Doomcloud= cloak. Shrines: 3 cauldrons.

Our first set was right in front of the stairs behind a spire. The level started a little rough, we had several storms lurking behind corners. They were singles though, and after some 5 of them were hunted down, we had the stair area carved out and a good set. Taoni scouted and brought melees to our set. Witches were dispatched where found, or in case of singles brought into a sitting duck position so that our warr would bow up and tag them too.

We had great respect for those fast attackers and used only really good sets, a total of 3 for the entire level. The scout was running through several pair of shoes, but we made it without casualties.

HELL HELL FOURTEEN: Hellspawns, Steel lords. Drops: elix str, book Lightn, book Heal, staff HB, staff heal(31), short battle bow, skull cap(ages), skull cap, long sword, amulet(corpse), ring(chest), Stareye - short bow, Steel Skull - large shield(ages). Shrines: cauldron

No good set in sight, so we dug in "behind the stairs". We soon found a nice spire to execute witches though. Taoni would lure/tag them and settle for cover behind that spire, while Roede would bow them down from the sidelines.

We had a very close call with 2 knights and a witch, but 2 SC and 2 reds later, all was settled. Again we worked carefully from only 4 sets. Those were long runs for the scout, but it also allowed her to stretch them out. After Roede had luped, Taoni was free to go on her own some more.

Taoni still lvl 31, Roede lup to lvl 32.

At the end of this session we used our first Glimmering, hoping to improve the rogue?s overall stats. We had:

14th Session, April 8th 03
HELL HELL FIFTEEN: Magistrates, Azure Drakes. Drops: book MS, cape, cloak, mace, comp bow, long bow, buckler, great axe, claymore, great sword, ring, weaponrack= mace, Red Vex= Scavengers Carapace, Black Jade= plate, Bloodlust= Grandfather, Laz= Naj?s Puzzler. Shrines: weaponrack.

The stairs were just north of the Laz Chamber. A side pocket contained some mages. We cleared those to claim our first set. Later, we found out about the Azures. Taoni was happy with the mages, Roede was happy with the drakes. He was just 3 dex shy of perfect block and had 79% connect rate with full stunning power, using the mithril/blood sword.

We cleared arround Laz first and inside too, but we left Laz alive so as to make scouting around the pentagram a little easier. One of the twins was polite enough to give the Scavengers Carapace. We ided that and together with the jade/wolf crown Taoni could face those magistrates with 64% resist.

In the quadrant south of Laz, we found a 5-star set: a small room with the opening partially blocked by a spire and barrels, leaving only a 1-tile entry. Roede settled there and handled drake packs of all sizes easily. Taoni could really speed up the scouting now and switch to mass activation -- at one point she brought back TWELVE drakes to this set point!

In the SE quadrant we found a second set of similar quality, lucky us. Lusty was kinda executed with the warr/decoy blocking most of her shots, while the rogue was free to pump her full of arrows. Laz was fooled into a corner and frozen by the warr and the rogue shot him to pieces. We also ided the plate from Jade: of stars +8 -- not too shabby.

Taoni still lvl 31, Roede still lvl 32

HELL HELL SIXTEEN: Standard foes. Drops: long battle bow, comp bow, short bow, longsword, cloak, amulet, Gorash= great sword.

Originally we hadn't planed for 16 in this session, but since we moved so fast through 15 there was still enough time to go for more.

The stairs were between rooms 1&2. Taoni soloed/cleared around room 2(maze) first. Then Roede settled at the SE corner of the maze and Taoni worked the dungeon, mostly on her own. Only very stubborn knights got some treatment from Roede. We used our Eldritch here and transformed reds into yellows, so Taoni could keep her MS going. Roede had no real need for all those reds, weilding his private blood fountain. He'd learned to love his blood weapons. Taoni lost her Amber Bow of Fire, it morphed into gold while she was switching weapons and picking up a pile of gold! Ah well....

When the cross (third room) was cleared and only the Demon's lair left, we used our second Glimmer on drops from 15&16. We had:

comp bow - heaven +15
comp bow - meteoric/sorcery
LBB - sorcery
long bow - stars
ring - obsidian
amulet - garnet

On one hand, we wanted to make this a full clear. We'd gone all the way so far and we didn't want to leave some guards at the very end. Otoh, parking as we usually did in Normal or NM diff was no real option when a single apoc could exceed the life of our warrior.

Roede left the game and searched bnet a bit. Luckily he found Sabra, who joined the game and kept it open for us.

As before, we planned to do this in shield/executioner setup with the warr as fast/perfect blocker and the rogue in S/S setup doing some relevant damage too. We switched our gear around a bit, looking for best overall results and then went down to challenge him.

AC 101, To Hit 176%, Damage 37-44(tripled due to Civerb's Cudgel), Resistances all zero. Cap(3) of Stars +10, CC, Plate(48) of Stars+8, Drakes+43 Amulet of Wizardry +21, Shield(18) of the Tiger+41, Silver+16 Ring of Radiance, Gold+28 Ring of Radiance.

Of course, we set TPs in diferent corners of the dungeon. Then Roede set inside the cross with an
infra hotkeyed. Taoni sent an invitation (lightn) along the centerline between rooms 3 and 4, and after she blocked the initial apoc, ran to put her back to the wall with the warrior and the party was on. Oddly for us, he attacked Taoni (the rogue, non-game creator), the perfect but not-so-fast blocker, and she took some damage. But that freed Roede to punch away, and that he did with a vengence! Diablo gave in some time later. No potions used by Roede; two small blues used by Taoni.

We then rejoined the game, thanked Sabra for holding it, and cleared the remaining guards without any problems.

Note: thinking about it -- the game creator (Roede) left to find Sabra, and she joined the game before he re-joined. Thus she claimed the #1/creator spot, Taoni remained at the #2 joiner, and Roede moved to #3 joiner of the game. With Sabra staying in town, down in the dungeon Diablo and the knights of the guard later ended up attacking the Rogue! Could have been disastrous, but wasn't. Certainly did startle the Rogue, however! Good thing Roede had both good to hit and good stunning capabilities.

Final victory achieved; all levels cleared, no demons surviving.
