Fame mechanism |

Diagnosis
Fame is one of the most original concepts in 4x games. Yet its mechanism is somewhat disappointing: it triggers in the early game (heroes) when you have not built any substantial fame yet. Then you face a long "plateau" with very little activity. You gather fame, but the benefits are pretty poor. Being famous helps a bit. A little bit.
Formula
Code: p (item or hero) = fame / 25 + 1 compared with d100
(for famous, p1 = p * 2)
So, when you hit about 20-25 fame (which is probably near endgame), the mechanism finally starts to work again. You are offered items, heroes, mercenaries... sadly, you don't need them that much at that point.
Let's not make mistake, the fame mechanism needs to be very hard to predict, unforgiving. There are other "primary" ways to get top units, special items, best heroes. Increasing the fame effect could be fatal to other concepts.
Suggestion
Let's do nothing but soften the scale.
We can use 1/2 percent steps instead of 1 percent steps, which gives us:
Code: p (item or hero) = fame / 12 + 2 compared to d200
Now, when you hit fame = 12, it makes a difference! You have 1/2% better chance (or full 1% in the case you're famous) of a hero knocking on your door. At fame = 25, you have the same chance (+1%) as in MoM 1.31.
With mercenaries, it is even better. Original formula
Code: p (mercenary) = fame / 20 + 1 compared with d100
(for famous, p1 = p * 2)
Softened one
Code: p (mercenary) = fame / 10 + 2 compared with d200
gives you a nice side-effect. Being famous (+10 fame) instantly brings you more attention from mercenaries. Instead of 2% chance (MoM 1.31) you get 1,5 * 2 = 3% chance of being offered help. Just cause gives you +0,5% chance as well. (These small % increments are quite important in long term.)
Summa of effects of softened formula:
- Fame is not useless in mid-game
- Famous trait can now be important beyond first hero offer
- Mercenaries will show up more often
- Items will be offered earlier than in endgame
(By the way, the increments could be even smaller, for instance 0,25%. With this type of turn-to-turn probability, even these small differences matter.)
What do you think?

Hello, there is a pitboss game being organized at Reddit, will start in 2 days and 11 hours.
8 players, FFH2 game, I think they are currently planning to use Erebus Continent with smart climate override.
Players are Bannor, Kuriotates, Lanun, Illians, Grigori, Calabim, Sheaim, and Khazad.
The desire is for starts to be somewhat flavored, yet balanced above all else. (as well as expansion areas too, I'd think)
In any case, it is ultimately the mapmaker's decision.
I only ask that no one is to be forest choked XD ... and that if one land based power gets Plains hill + Floodplains start, all should (except maybe Kurios, but still).
Anyways, if you are interested in making/helping to make/peer review a Map ... please sign on this thread

As described in the other thread, here is a small but challenging tournament for you all to enjoy. Rules are as follows:
Setup
- Impossible
- Large land mass
- Powerful magic
- 4 enemies
- Latest version of Insecticide
- Victory condition: Control 10 nodes (must be melded)
- Bonus points: Defeat enemy wizards (2 years subtracted from final score for each dead wizard)
Starting conditions
- Channeler + Archmage + Node Mastery + Nature Mastery + 4x Nature + 1x Chaos + 1x Sorcery
- Starting spells: Resist Elements, Giant Strength, Earth Lore
- Barbarians
- 100 gold, 50 mana, 10 fame, size 6 capital with Granary added
Restrictions
- Max one hero per stack
- Must raze non-Barbarian cities
- May not use cavalry and berserkers (or flying warships)
Starting save may be downloaded here
Games must be submitted for scoring by October 30th. You're allowed to keep playing after controlling 10 nodes, if you think you can improve your score by rapidly killing one or more wizards. If you accidentally kill off all wizards without controlling at least 10 nodes, you lose. You're encouraged to write a game report with as much detail as you care to provide.
In addition, all participants are asked to provide the following summary every 4 years on January:
- list of cities and their sizes
- list of units (feel free to note down how many elite, mithril and adamantium units you have)
- list of heroes, including experience and items
- gold, mana and casting skill
I won't be scoring in the game as I've seen the map, but I'll play and submit a report anyway. Let me know if you encounter any problems or errors with the setup and I'll fix them as soon as possible. Hope we'll have a good turnout, happy nerding everyone :hat:

PBEM / PB list |

So I thought it might be useful to have a list of the different PBEM and/or Pitboss games.
I seem to remember that someone (Sullla?) made a list of PB games but I couldn't find it. In any case, I started working on the PBEMs but then I thought it might be easier to "crowd-source" it.
So I made a Google Spreadsheet. If you feel like it, feel free to update it with any PBEMs that you were in or know about.

FFH PBEM XIV Organizing/Tech Thread |

This thread is a split from Tasunke's thread, where discussion was drifting toward a new CTON (Can't Talk Or Negotiate) FfH PBEM game.
The concept: no communication between players, other than the allowable selections on the diplo screen (i.e., you can propose trading wine for gems, demand 100 gold, propose a peace treaty, etc., but can't add any extra text).
With the following (negotiable) exceptions:
- no tech trading
- no city gifting/trading
Apparently, this is really an "AI diplo" game, and I should have named the thread more descriptively.
Final cast of characters, in playing order:
DaveV - Alexis of Amurites
Ichabod - Arendel of Bannor
Ilios - Dain of Svarts
Tholal - Thessa of Kurios
Tasunke - Perpy of Sheaim
Llewyn - Falamar of Sidar
