After years of staying away, I got back into WoW on 15 May, starting a brand new character to experience the changes Blizz made in âvanillaâ WoW.
Now it is 15 July, and I have a lvl 84.5 character 8-0. Clvl 85 is the current cap. Iâve gone through, what, 8 years of content in 8 weeks?
Well, *that* is one major changeâ¦
Anyway, I think *most* of the changes are for the good, some are not so much, and a lot of other stuff. If anyone is interested, Iâll pontificate, otherwise, back to lvl cap and epic gear hunt.
The TLDR is:
Cataclysm 0-60 is the best single-player game of that type I have ever played. Ever. Awesome.
This does not include others *not* of that type, such as Portal2 8-).
Yes, I understand this is not technically a single player game. It is, though, now, unless you want to do raid content. I went 0-60 and only saw one other player out in the world. The entire time. Then about 3 in Outland. More in Northrend. 5-6 in my zone every time in Caty. This is not exactly âmassiveâ 8-)
Iâm on an old server, and an old RP server to boot, but stillâit is in the top 5-10 in population in all of WoW.
Downsideâ
They have split the game. PvE Questing is slightly more difficult than sitting up straight without drooling, and slightly less difficult than breathing.
Raiding (from what I read) is a *lot* more technical, but (again, from what I read), technical to the absurd. I mean, there are vids online of where exactly everyone should stand and what everyone should do every second and I actually do understand the fun in technical (cough)...
But No further comment on that one 8-).
Anyway, as far as how easy PvE isâgranted, I play an OP spec, but one that is supposed to be challenging to play in combatâlots of different skills that have to be combined in the correct way. I died once tonight. To an elite boss 1 clvl higher. I was shocked. I hadnât died in 20 clvls. I went down when the boss had 5% health left. I wasnât watching my health, as it doesnât usually matter. I did not cast either of my +damage talents, as it doesnât usually matter. I didnât cast my +energy effect to get more premium attacks in because it doesnât usually matter. I didnât cast any of my 3 survival instant-cast skills, as it just isnât usually needed.
So, there is that , thenâ¦

There's a thread over in the DIplomacy sub-forum about a new no-press "gunboat" game of Diplomacy which I thought I'd give a "shoutout" to.
I'm GMing the game, and it will be on one of the email "judges" or some other automatic adjudicator.
No-press and gunboat means that you won't know who is playing who, or even who is in the game. Deadlines will be 24h, but that should be fairly manageable since you don't have to talk to anyone.
You can post in that thread, or you can just email / IM / PM me - in addition to the 2 signups in the thread there are 2 other folks who have committed to playing, so we only need 3 more.
If you wanted an intro to Diplomacy but didn't want to spend the time to play a "real" game, this may be the game for you

I'm abusing this forum to write down my planning process and progress. You're my post-its now!
The plan and questions
-fonts
I need a way to print strings onto the screen
-city screen
Problems to tackle: city layout, city info, setting worker/farmer ratio, production item changing, buying, minimap, garrison display, texts
-production change screen
Problems to tackle: how to collect available items
-recoloring
City flags need recoloring. This is done with palette manipulation in the original, but I have to do it by hand. Find out what else needs recoloring.
-AI
We need some AI for neutral cities anyway, so why not add AI players.
-config files
Oh boy, so many unanswered questions. This might need ts own post.
-magic screen
Problems to tackle: sliders
-spell screen
Problems to tackle: displaying book, shifting pages
-spell research screen
Problems to tackle: find out how the unresearched spells are printed
-map generation
Problems to tackle: how to generate a nice map. Should this be the same as the original? Should mapsize be the same as original?
-combat
This is also its own postworthy. Should combat be a spectator sport?
-diplomacy
Most original stuff wont work between players. We need new options? Or shuold this be skipped?
-nodes
-fog of war
-spells
Im unsure wether all spells would fit a config description. I aim to not hardcode spells.
-special abilities
Same problems as with spells, but mor elikely to succeed.
-UI separation
Maybe this should be its own project? Or should this be skinnable?
-graphics loading
-advisors
Should there be a script that you could apply to cities, to cut down on micro?
This might be needed as otherwise turns can drag on, especially with multiple players
-save game
-off-turn commands: these will be cached and replayed whenever
this allows to micro cities when not the playerrs turn-> how to display?
-enlist people with different skills to help the project
Needs: document to follow, tools to use
-client/server versus peer-to-peer
Currently the game is peertopeer, with all participants keeping in sync. Is there a good reason to switch to a client/server architecture?
-towers of wizardry
-roads and enchanted roads
-items and item creation
Any input on these is welcome!

Edit: sourceforge seems to have changed since the last time i checked this post. Ill do something about it soonish. Binary currently unavalable.
Im Gabor, and reMaster of magic is my attempt at a remake of MOM.

How to use
Download all files!
reMaster of magic uses .NET 4, if you dont have that installed, its a free download from http://www.microsoft.com. I plan a mono version in the future (and it should be possible to compile against 3.5 too).
You will need the original MOM, because remaster uses the original graphics (this may change in the future). Open path.txt and replace the path to the original there. (Path.txt should contain 1 path only, at the first line fo the file)
Run reMOM.exe, and enjoy!

Back when we were at dragonsword.com we made some pretty good progress at spreading the knowledge of our existence, and a sizable community popped up. Sadly, the owner pulled the plug quite suddenly. I couldn't get in touch with most of them, and all the links I've posted for DS around the web are now useless. If anyone is interested in helping out, I'd like to start another small campaign to post links to this forum everywhere that people discuss MoM. I'll type up a standard message you can post (or feel free to use your own), and I'll keep track of where we've spread the good word in this thread.

Is it too noob-ish of me to straight up ask for tips on winning games on Hard/Impossible? Normal difficulty is still fun but way too easy even vs. 4 opponents.
I have won vs. 3 opponents on Hard before but only with luck - finding and killing one wizard before she has enough mana to return, towers the AI couldn't break through, cheesing defense with invisible units etc.
Usually I manage to expand to 3 or 4 cities but that's about the time one or more enemy wizards appears on my doorstep with massive enchanted stacks of "f you" and my feeble empire starts crumbling.
Whatever decent offensive stack I've built at this point is out of position as far as guarding my cities and/or getting whittled down by my sallies on nodes and lairs.
Should I start w/ 11 books and rely on a killer spell? How do I expand reasonably quickly, yet sustainably - or should I focus on one or two megacities? Get gold or mana first?
Specific or general tips are very much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
