I was wondering if anyone here had played the old game Panzer General. I was really impressed by how sophisticated it was for such an old game- a lot of depth, well balanced, and a surprisingly decent AI. I'm not sure how good it would be for multiplayer though.
Anyway, it seems like a company has decided to do a remake of it, and they're releasing it soon. http://panzer-corps.com/ I'm trying to decide whether to buy it or not.

FFH2 - Postgame Thread |

Well, I haven't ready any spolier threads yet (okay I peeked at the last few pages of the lurker thread), but I certainly plan on it. I figured I would get a postgame thread rolling with a critique of the Calabim game .
I thought our opening was just okay. Our capital was decent, and we did well to push hard for that very strong second city. The Code of Laws beeline was probalby the right move. Its great for the economy but not so hot for expansion. If the Vampires have one weakness, its no Elder Councils. God King is a very strong early civic, but not enough to justify the tech. So you are in a situation where you miss out on two big boosts. Uberfish (who I've always thought was the best civ player I knew, and who got me into FFH), really showed that with his early Academy and using SPI to get to God King. Anyway, our expansion was average at best and our economy took a while to get going. So I'd give our opening a C+.
The transition from what I call early game to mid-game was dominated by the "Ilios situation". There were multiple angles to the dogpile. First, uberfish did a very nice job getting us involved while commiting essentially nothing. I went back through our old chats after the fact and realized it after the fact Second, I thought we did a pretty good job too. It might not look like it, given all those dead units, but above and beyond trimming the tall poppy I was quite worried about Serdoa. He had more cities and much more productioni that we did. We needed time to get to Feudalism, and the CoW bought us that. Amelia coming in late was a disappointment, but that's the way these things go.
I consider the mid game to begin once we had our first Vampire. Acutally I am going to switch pronouns now, because sunrise089 was long gone :neenernee. Anyway, it was pretty obvious Serdoa was going to attack us, until he saw that Vampire. The decision to save cash and upgrade Warriors was a pretty good one I thought. The war against Serdoa was decisive, although I'm not sure he was bringing his "A" game at the time. Rolling into Mist was almost an accident, I had not planned on doing that but there was going to be signinficant cultural pressure on our border. The beauty of Aristofarms, especially with Sanitation and under Sacrifice the Weak, is how quickly new cities become useful, and how quickly they move from useful to very useful .
I'm not talking about the Horseman.
The transition from mid game to end game was the double team of Ilios. He'd played a superb game start to finish, making all the right moves and building an impressive economy. I chatted a lot with uberfish and we came to an arrangment to attack Ilios together, then Amelia, then duke it out. I guess the lurkers didn't like being in the dark on that one, next time I'll be more forthcoming . This was actually my favorite part of the game. We co-played the turns together and chatted constantly about how to attack and position our units. I don't think it would have gone any smoother if one player was playing both civs. Ilios poor guy had no chance . I think we took 5 cities on turn one, and he was down to just Helios before much longer. Of course, he had that city forever .
The end game was supposed to be my showdown with uberfish, but it ended up being Amelia. I was already #1 in population despite rampant drafting and feasting, was approaching #1 in land area with my spam, and had a plan to get 200+ commando vampires, Ice III Gibbon, Brujah, Eidolons, Beasts of Agares, Mithril Weapons, yada yada by turn 200. Uberfish was nice enough to not save cash and rush the Tower of Master before I could do anything about it .
Anyway the real end game was my assault on the Lanun. Amelia defended brilliantly, baited me with Saverous (he knew I couldn't resist that damn Axe!), and then sprung his world spell on me to devastating effect. Pretty much a textbook pyrrhic victory . I was really looking forward to the "big showdwon" with uberfish, but Amelia showed what a determined and skilled player he was. Just 7 cities and he came up with nearly 70 HAs, 10 Cultists, Hemah, etc. .
Overall I do think Flauros is the best leader in the game. This was a decent example of what he could do, although I'm sure a better player would have been able to win this game. As long as I've played FFH, its a surprise that I could learn so much. The Malakim are far better than I thought they were, in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing. The Horsemen...well I learned stuff there but I still don't want to talk about it . I didn't know Raging Seas could kill units. In fact I still don't, I couldn't bring myself to open up the save .
Anyway, I had a great time in this game! All the players were cool, and I'd play with any of them again .
Darrell
P.S. Mist, Sciz I didn't mention you much here because I didn't have a lot of interaction, but I'll post some thoughts after reading your thread.

Power ratings in FFH |

Hey everyone. I'm a new lurker here and I've been reading through some of the FFH PBEM games (excellent reading!) and there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the power rating and its associated graph.
Power is not simply the number of troops you have. Buildings and techs can also have a power rating, and power ratings are also increased whenever a city grows. I think the confusing part is that this power rating is not only displayed on the power graph, but it also directly translates to 'Soldiers' on the Demographics screen.
Also, some of the XML power ratings are totally out of whack (for example, Hill Giants are 0, Infernal and Mercurian Palaces are 1000!)
So when you see a player's power rating/soldier demographics increase, it could be troops, but it could also be because of techs, buildings, population growth, or all of the above!
