Let's play MOO1

Hey guys,

great to see some activity in this forum, again. A while ago I did an English "let's play MOO1" on this non-evil, but somehow evil tube site. I had a very tough game starting as mrrshans on impossible / medium galaxy with kyrup's patch - you might wanna check it out... lol

A little slow at the beginning and I'm not a native speaker, but hey, it's MOO1!

Great game. Some new points for me.

Why are you sending massive population transfers to every new colony? You're sending large quantities of population working in factories onto new colonies where they won't be working in factories. While this gets the new colonies off to a faster start, it comes at the cost of slowing down your mature worlds and stunting your overall growth curve. Sending some pop to get them started is a good idea, but knocking your home planet down to just 23 pop in 2303 is rather silly.

I'd also suggest keeping scouts over all the planets you explore - it's possible to chase off unarmed AI colony ships this way. You never built any extra scouts and tried to do all the exploring with the initial two ships. On a similar note, the default Colony ship should be scrapped after you settle your second planet. It's more expensive than building a new Colony ship with the exact same design. You didn't scrap any of the initial designs and build the inefficient Colony ship.

Anyway, these are some simple suggestions to play stronger openings. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching my start and for your tips.

I was desparate for new colonies and tried to invade at any cost, because 2 colonies are not enough for winning.

How can new colony ships be cheaper? All ships decrease their cost as you discover new technologies, even old ones, no need to redesign.

It's a bug, not just the natural decrease in cost over time. Sullla's talking about redesigning the ships on the starting turn. Both scout and colony ship. If you compare the cost, the new version will be cheaper/faster to build, even though it uses the exact same design.

My understanding is that the default designs are based on having a tech level in each field of zero. When you scrap them, you are designing based on a tech level of one. This makes them slightly cheaper. It's one of the bugs that's simply a part of this old game, unfortunately.

I'm planning on doing a video series for Master of Orion when my current Civ4 game is done. In the meantime, Sirian's Tutorial is probably still the best resource for explaning how to execute a strong early game. It's a great read on how to manage early game population transfers and maintain scout blockades.

@ YellowPsi
Thanks - sadly your link was gone before I could check it...
I think I explained a lot about pop growth during my LP. It is never a good idea to empty your homeworld.

@ Tyrmith / Sullla
I am not sure but hadn't kyrub patched the ship cost bug in one of his latest "patches"? Anyway, out of year-long routine I am still scrapping the default designs. lol

This is correct. As Sullla notes, the expensive default Scout/Colship cost in the original game is a bug - for some reason their cost doesn't change with tech level. In kyrub's patch though, this bug is fixed, and their costs are the same as for any identical ship you might design yourself.
