Sirian's answer was don't set this situation up intentionally, but don't go to great lengths to avoid it if it happens.
My personal *unofficial* answer is I go to great lengths to avoid it. If I have old missile boats with limited range missiles (something I don't often have because I usually don't put any missiles previous to Mercs on boats) over one of my planets with bases, I wont fire the limited range missiles unless I move in to the point where the attacking ships won't retreat because they can't get out of range EVER. I try not to back up stacks period if I have more than one missile design in a fight, and never do it so that annother missile design can then plaster that stack. I have *rarely* used this to back up a stack away from my beam ships that were moving in on annother enemy stack, but I would call that a point of strategy, since I effectively "wasted" that shot since there is no follow up attack on that fleet. It's not something I set up on purpose ever. I don't build/keep a handful of obsolete missile designs around for this kind of thing. If I build missile boats, I don't build a handful of cruisers. I build a badass fleet of small/medium enemy ship/planet wasters :war: (at least in theory... sometimes they are, well, less badass than I'd like
).
The simple rule I follow here is: If it looks exploitave, feels exploitave, or smells exploitave, its probably not something you want to do because it's probably exploitave.

AFAICS Zed's answer is sufficient. The AI ceartianally knows how to use those against MY plantes :axe: . I'm not quite sure why this is an issue. Perhaps you would care to explain why/when this is bad in your opinion, because I'm probably as lost here as I was on the missile backup issue
