As far as I know, 1.40n has moved from bug fixing to making more substantial changes to the game. I don't know what exactly it is that people don't like about it. I never tried it because everyone here seems to prefer 1.40m.

1.40M was kyrub's latest "stable" patch. Reading through the 1.40N thread again, it looks like it wasn't fully tested and was intended as a starting point for a more complete overhaul, mainly of the AI, that never got fully implemented. Among other issues, the extant 1.40N seems to have led to ~permanent all-AIs alliances rather than the more complex (though largely-random) AI-AI relationships that make the game more interesting and less "me vs the universe."
