Neither can anyone else. It is entirely equal, therefore you can defend both places at once.

I don't quite get this logic. Mobility is critical to defending multiple points on the map, and mobility to/from the donut to the center is necessarily limited. It's balanced, that's for sure, since everyone has equal access. This means that defenders of the center are still spread out. Spread out is a recipe for disaster for defense. Also, someone who doesn't spread to the center is concentrated for attacking the player who has spread their forces out.

I like the center-jungle idea. If the donut's food-poor, then a lot of grassland jungle would make it very tempting, but you're not going to see a city-spammer REXing 10 cities in the center and just taking over before anyone else gets a chance to compete. And then it can have most of the calendar set.
