I think it's not 'honourable play' - a little to far on the 'lies' side of the equation to me, but it's not a big foul. Certainly not on the same level with agreeing a NAP then backstabbing, for example.
On second thoughts, I think I do agree with you on the game mechanics subterfuge. I think that claiming a "misclick" was fine, but invoking excessive game mechanics arguments and posting on the IT thread to support this was somewhat beyond honourable.
I would think that the correct diplomatic strategy for any team with good intentions and a genuine misclick who wants to retain trust is to offer a 1-2 turn unilateral NAP.
