What's funny is last night when actually playing the turn I realized the reason I didn't have a route was because I haven't actually gotten to his coastline yet, and then this morning while writing this post I somehow forgot this.
Also one thing I didn't quite understand.

I made contact with him when my Galley was 1S of where it is right now. I have no idea why. None of his units or culture were even visible. I wish I had grabbed a screenshot of it. The only thing I can figure is he had a unit that could see me because I'm at a lower elevation, while I could not see back? Not really sure what happened. Obviously I moved up and can see the cultural border now, but even in this spot, I'm not close enough to his culture to make contact that way. So I'm not really sure why we have contact? I definitely can't think of anything other than the theory I've written here.
