One of the toughest things for programmers is to resist the urge (or the mandate) to throw in features that don't add anything significant to functionality but are really cool. The game would be just as playable without flying camera, but its addition to the game opens up a steaming cesspool of potential abuse. And, of course, all the time spent programming and debugging it could have been spent on fixing bugs or adding things that *would* have improved the game. See misfeature.

That is an incredibly ignorant and smarmy thing to say. Ignorant because its wrong (Civ4's world engine was actually originally designed for an RTS project that Firaxis canceled some time before development on Civ4 started, and thus already had the camera feature built-in from the beginning), and smarmy because you're trying to force your own personal preferences as some kind of moral and logical authority.

A game is not a shell script, nor some cold and functional user interface, nor even some kind of state machine that takes user time as input and prints out money. There are many, many big-budget games designed this way, (for a recent example, see Diablo 3 or the new Sim City) but they are not the games people play a decade later. Making good games is as much about "throwing in features that don't add anything significant to functionality but are really cool" as it is about actually completing the product because good games have life that the designer is trying to share with the player. For most people, Civ4 is about exploring and building their own world, and being able to fly and zoom around in it is as much a part of the game as anything else. Hell, just look at the original opening cinematic! How can you possibly call it a misfeature!

I'm sorry, "GermanJojo", I must have missed the post where you signed up to play with us. I can't think of any other reason why you're in this thread arguing with people. Kindly step out and bother people someplace else.

I thought this was a public forum, """""BobChillingworth"""". I certainly wasn't harassing anyone in their personal thread, just posting my own reaction to a discussion of the extended Civ4 metagame at large. If y'all so against talking to outsiders, though, then there's no reason me to stay here and I won't bother y'all any longer.

Saying that someone is "incredibly ignorant and smarmy" is rude. Doing so in the tech thread of a game you aren't even playing in is both rude and disruptive. Nobody here would hijack PB 20's tech thread by starting arguments completely unrelated to the game at hand. I must demand that you extend to us the same courtesy, and take your spurious personal attacks elsewhere. There is no shortage of alternate venues for debate on this site. Unless you somehow become directly involved in the game, please do not post in this thread again.

So, regarding the game: I do reload if I missclick and never thought of it as cheating. If I gained information due to the missclick I've got to live with it, but if I just started a farm when I wanted a cottage I'll reload.

My timeslot is 20:00 - 24:00 GMT +2 so 18:00 - 22:00 GMT. I usually am able to pick up the save before, and sometimes I'll only be able to pick it up after, but over 90% of the time I'll be able to play within this time frame.

(all times GMT)

Yell0w: 0500 - 0900

GreyWolf: 1200 - 1500 (I took this from a previous game, let me know if it's inaccurate)

Kredom: 2200 - 0300 (also 1500 - 1700)

Dave: 2300 - 0100 (also 0900 - 1200 & 1700 - 1800)

Bob: 2300 - 0500

Ellimist: 0100 - 0500

Let me know if the above doesn't seem like an acceptable order. Apologies Dave for not giving you your preferred 0900 - 1200 slot- if you missed that window of availability though it looks like it would hold the turn up for the rest of the day. I figure the above schedule has less pressure, and gives you two opportunities to play.

i think yellow will have to go between greywolf and me.
