Stuff About Teams We're Playing Against
Fifth Victims - Pindicator w/mackoti Playing as: Boudica of Russia (Charismatic, Aggressive, Cossack, Research Institute) I GIS'd "crazy Russian woman" and got that. I had intended something more bloodthirsty but how could I pass on that? Known Knowns: I mean, what do you want me to say here? Pindicator is a player on a similar level to us, extremely capable prone to lapses in judgment. He also has a bit of a habit of making the same mistake over and over again - constantly taking the slightly riskier play and then boom, civ happens. He has also been screwed by the mapmaker quite a bit though. Nonetheless, on his own he is equally capable of having his game blow up 50t in as he is of winning in a laugher. Were he playing solo, Boudica of Russia seems like a reactionary choice. He's been screwed early so many times recently that he probably wants to extract his own pound of flesh and CHM Cossacks have every potential to make that happen. Someone is going to be his neighbor, someone is going to try and expand and grow normally, someone is going to die if Boudica of Russia rolls up before you've got Cannon and/or MachineGuns. Someone, obviously, is going to be us. Beyond that, even after the early game, Boudica will be a strong warmonger throughout. There's not a lot of growth related flash here, but if she stays ballpark in tech and production, then she's going to be favored in most battles. Am I missing anything? No? Good. Oh. Right. Mackoti is one of if not the sole consensus best player on this site. In his early games he was very good but a level below dominant. Then he discovered he could read everyone's spoiler threads without repercussion because we are the absolute wimpiest community you will ever find at enforcing our rules. Now he basically can only be beaten by SevenSpirits and/or novice, neither of whom ever play anymore. Well and players on that level, I'm not sure if we've found any of those in the last 15 or so games, I don't really pay attention. I suppose he can also be beaten by the map, since anyone can be beaten by the map. Even if I didn't have any suspicions about his less than savory practices, his arrival on the scene would still be depressing because you were originally looking at a game of relatively evenly matched T3-T5 players (OLD SCHOOL) and his inclusion tilts the balance. My lone hope is that pindicator doesn't really let mackoti grab the wheel to any great extent and then mackoti gets bored and stops providing him with advice. Otherwise, everyone else is playing for 2nd place. Known Unknowns: How much influence will Pindicator allow mackoti to have? Will the constant insults in this thread get mackoti to not read it so we have a mild advantage on our competitors? Can Pindicator avoid making the game-crippling seemingly reasonable slightly-risky decision that has killed so many of his recent games? Taking the players out of it - how much more important are military traits in a game like this where it really isn't possible to get as far ahead without some hot military action? If the answer is very, then these guys might win straight up anyway. Here's the video I was going to put in the yearbook portion if you could put more than one video in a post:
Just linking this might have more appropriate, though. Shows you how old that site is btw, that Massan's page isn't MrDestructoids is pretty amazing.

I have to say, that picture is amazing. I could just stare at that woman wielding the hatchet for hours.

Wait? It'll be a tie between Pindi and Scooter?
Also Luddite was Mackoti kryptonite - if anyone knows how to get in touch with him you could take him on as a consultant...

Yeah, I think when I originally made this I intended to put pindickoti 2nd but then I was so full of piss and vinegar that I forgot. Let's not be silly, its not like my pregame predictions have ever borne out. Let's just pretend I meant that all along.

Stuff About Teams We're Playing Against
Sixth Victims - Cheater Hater and Donovan Zoi Playing as: Peter of India (Expansive, Philosophical, Fast Work, Mausoleum) Peter of India was a common pick back in the early days of RB MP. Also, I lost to it in my first ever MP Civ game. Memories... Known Knowns: I have a very vague impression of these guys. I keep mistaking Cheater Hater with CFCJesterFool though I don't recall hearing much about CH's deity exploits. I certainly have never read anything about any games he played but his name just sort of sounds CFC-ish. Donovan Zoi was in one or more of the demogames but seems like a nice enough guy who maybe is in over his head a bit. I think that mostly came from reading some posts after he took over for Serdoa in 27 and in fairness, everybody looks over their head when they take over someone else's game. Nonetheless, I look at them as one of the less accomplished pairs here but that doesn't mean much given that everyone is on relatively even footing in this setup. In terms of the pick, they obviously had a similar view on the setup as we did, as we each picked Darius/Dutch first, but we won the coin flip. We did not rank Peter of India but that was after seeing the start. Before seeing the start, we considered taking them if there were an average to above-average number of forests on the start. Fast Workers will still help you get going here and they are the best combat workers you can conceive. Expansive is pretty wasted other than a slight discount on settlers as workers are cheap enough with what production is going to look like for the worker bonus to be not that good. PHI is a popular trait in these advanced starts, though I don't know why. Are you really going to build enough universities for Oxford? Seems wishful thinking to me. Mausoleums aren't bad as UBs go when they're enabled immediately but I don't think we're going to see a ton of jails built. I dunno, maybe I'm being a little pessimistic but I don't forsee a whole lot of builds that aren't either increasing production or building units. Known Unknowns: Mostly everything, since as I said, I'm not especially familiar with either player. Can FW be leveraged enough to give the India advantage? There's no questioning they will save you worker turns. Will they save enough to balance a fairly weak set of traits? I'm dubious but time will tell. The Good Guys - Gaspar and NobleHelium w/Old Harry
Playing as: Darius of the Netherlands (Organized, Financial, East Indiaman, Dike) Mmm, dikes. Known Knowns: These guys suck! Oh. If you don't know our routine, basically I'm the big picture guy and Noble is the details guy. Harry is here to keep us in check. Our skillsets compliment each other well when we're not sucked in by a swirling vortex of negativity. When they do, we fuel each other's worst tendencies and basically play 100% worse than either of us would play by ourselves. So, what's it looking like so far? We went through the full gamut on the leader selection. Initially, Darius was not even on our list. We started out with Julius Caesar and everyone else - since IMP and ORG give discounts to the two most expensive things you have to build a lot of - factories and settlers. Once we got the start, however, IMP didn't seem quite as sexy as we originally planned - ultimately, the free commerce matters little but it matters most when you're trying to lurch towards Assembly Line and more importantly - Dikes are fantastic, if you don't weight towards Ancient Era, they're second only to Terraces and even that's debatable. We still get ORG goodness and East Indiamen aren't a bad consolation when its still a little while before oil ships come into play. The generic gameplan is get settlers out, get factories and dikes up, build a ton of workshops and windmills and then... profit! Known Unknowns: How an Industrial Era start will play out, primarily. I think I'm most curious as to how far we'll all tech. Its going to be very slow to start and even later, you basically are going to have to sacrifice production for research, so its pretty questionable how much tech is really worth it. There's probably a winning play to be made from never researching anything and just cranking out as many Cavs as humanly possible and trying to see if you can take over 40% of the world that way. I think if you can get to factories, you'll pretty much always beat the guys who don't have them because the payback horizon in terms of unit capacity is awfully short, even more so when factories give you a unit that wrecks Rifles. I'm pretty sure we'll at least aim to get to air power but there's probably going to be a lot of blood before planes are in the skies. Should be interesting...
