[SPOILERS] PBEM 8 - WarriorKnight's Spoiler Thread

There seems to be a decent amount of fighting going on. Both AH and StM have taken a city each from rego. None of this involves me though (except for StM who is building Triremes to get rid of my naval presence). I'm using this oppatunity to get to the next tier of units quickly and settle a couple more cities. I have Feudalism already for Vassalage and Longbows and after a quick stop at CoL (my best production city is costing 10gpt!) my next tech is Engineering.

Both Serdoa and StM have CS, fortunately Serdoa's heading for Metal Casting now, which means I don't have to worry about maces from him for the time being. Not sure about StM though, since he has triremes in the water. Probably doesn't matter since any naval landings won't work (unless cities are defended by warriors).

I sure wish I had alphabet now, there are too many things for me to get in the near future for me to go for it. Might try and see if overflow can get it.

Settled a jungle city this turn since I need to secure an iron for myself for pikes and knights. Serdoa's iron is nearby to and I can't let him secure that (unless he has another iron somewhere but it would probably have to be on the main islands somewhere).

Got the Great Lighthouse. I'm kinda surprised that no-one else went for it, since even in a AW game everyone will have several coastal cities. It gives me a noticeable GNP boost.

I'm kinda worried someone (India) will try and Lib Astronomy. I would go and take it myself but I'm preoccupied with soon-to-be-Cataphracts.

Anyone have any requests?

i think is not worth to lib Astronomy is easiar to research that than go all the way around.lol

How about an overview?

Ask and you shall recieve.

And this turn actually has some combat in it. wink

T90:

After the adventures of Swiftboat, Shoot tightened up the defenses on his Moai and island city preventing me from letting Swiftboat get another one hit kill. I instead blockaded his Moai city to which he responded by mass building Triremes. Recently I had to retreat the choke which means now he gets a turn to choke me.

Fortunately, I was prepared:

Not quite sure what will happen now. Short term I should be fine, but he must have settled a GG to get C1 out the gate on his Triremes. In the long term I'll have trouble keeping up with that.

Anyway, here's my cities:

Forgot to take a pic of the Demogs, but I'm barely 1st in every category and have quite the soldier lead on everyone.

After Engineering, the next thing to tech will probably have to be optics. After that, I could go for Banking, Astronomy or maybe backfill some techs (I'm not sure if someone has researched Music yet).

Thanks for the update WK.

What civics are you running and why?

HR - because I don't have any other reasonable choices
Vassalage - Don't have CS nor plan to go there soon. Saving unit costs and extra XP is really nice.
Slavery - Default, I'll probably stay in this for a long time
Whatever the default economy civic is - Don't have anything else available yet
Paganism - Don't have anything else available yet, can't afford the anarchy to switch, one possible backfilling option

Woo, thanks. Good update, cheers.

WarriorKnight Wrote:After the adventures of Swiftboat...

Heh, always makes me think of Knightboat.

Just noticed that this was the thread where we went crazy on the "sun" puns! lol Very happy to discover that the last two cities were named after two of my suggestions.

Remember when I said this?

WarriorKnight Wrote:I can't 1 move the city without Engineering, so I'm delaying any serious thoughts about attacking until then.

Guess who just got Engineering. smile

Here's the situation:

I have 10 HA's (9 in the city, 1 sentry) that can 1 move the city. On the defence are 2 CG Longbows and a warrior (pfft). My HA's will have crap odds on the Longbows to start off with but I have him easily outnumbered.

So how did it go down?

So I lost 4 HA's (plus whatever Serdoa kills IBT) to kill 2 Longbows and raze his border city. Worth it? Probably, the HA's aren't going to be valuable for much longer, plus gaining complete cultural control of this front is quite valuable (especially with Cataphracts coming in the next 10 turns). Of course, once he gets Cataphracts, he'll probably come looking for revenge and make me his no.1 target but that's just how things go.

Speaking of the Cataphract situation, I thought I could deny Serdoa his central iron but it appears he has another source on a nearby island. Will have to check if he's hooked it or not next turn. Also razing Antioch incrased the ETA of Guilds by one turn. jive

The other thing I did this turn is grab Alphabet to see where I stand technologically with everyone.

Shoot the Moon: (missing techs in can research column are compass and engineering)

Has over me: Monotheism, Civil Service
I have: Feudalism, Calendar, Currency, Alphabet, Engineering

He's the one who got the religion at Code of Laws. I think he got it only to get to Civil Service, but why didn't he take the Feudalism route? Otherwise doing fine technologically.

Serdoa: (missing tech is engineering)

Has over me: Meditation, Civil Service
I have: Polytheism, Code of Laws, Alphabet, Calendar, Engineering

Doing fairly well, Oracle build into Feudalism was a good move as that's needed for Guilds. Now he's going for Guilds, and I need to go crazy with the pikes and castles to stop him.

ad hoc: (missing tech is machinery)

Has over me: Meditation
I have: Polytheism, Code of Laws, Alphabet, Calendar, Currency, Machinery, Engineering

Not much to say, the failed rush on me left him behind, which is evidenced by being the only one to lack machinery. I can't attack him in the short term though since he has Charismatic, totem-poles longbows.

regoarrarr:

Has over me: Nothing
I have: Polytheism, Priesthood, Monarchy, Feudalism, Code of Laws, Alphabet, Calendar, Engineering

Is surprising behind. Doesn't have Monarchy or anything beyond Mysticism yet (perhaps he tried for the Pyramids and Serdoa beat him?).

Couple of interesting things:

I'm the only one with Calendar. I'm not really sure why though since there are several Calendar resource around. Perhaps everyone has enough happiness?

No-one has Aesthetics, which means no-one has the Artist at music. Might be worth going for that.

And I'm the tech leader. jive
