Yeah sorry I have a backlog to post. I'd say I've been busy but that's only part of it and playing Holy Fury is more responsible >_>

Currently out of town for thanksgiving so limited access to screenshots. Might have time to post some tomorrow but no promises.

CliffsNotes:
Founded BC Freedom just in time. Saunders fell right after and warped the palace over to the new city.
With the palace and the tobacco I lined up a Warrior to finish the turn before my territory expands to the Iron, which will disallow building Warriors. This would enable having two Swordsmen right when Rome could arrive.
Rome did arrive right on time, possibly lucky exploration possibly the GG movement bonus I forgot to factor in. Last turn (66 I think?) I finished the warrior and bought a tile to build an Encampment. This is unfortunately likely to delay the 2nd sword upgrade but I passed the hat around to the other civs so we'll see if anyone chips in. I offered 20Icon_Gold for 1gpt each. I don't expect to survive long enough for the gpt to fully pay it off but I'm hoping it'll demonstrate I'll pay them back when I can. I only *need* ~40Icon_Gold total but playing it safe not expecting everyone to kick in.
If the swords can hold off the Romans long enough I'll have an Encampment +100% chop into walls on T72. Not overly likely but I'm hoping the Romans aren't immediately sending their whole schwerpunkt since their DoFs will be running out around T70

"Schwerpunkt"? Hey, everybody, check out the vocabulary on this dude!

Although you do have my sympathy on Holy Fury, friend. It's sweet. Hope to hear from you soon.

Heh, well the running gag of comparing the situation to the German invasion of the Soviet Union lets me delude myself that all these hopeless defeats could eventually turn around tongue

Also, back at the hotel now so here's a pair of the latest screenshots, showing the tactical situation at the start of the last turn and the outpost's current status

Blargh. Catching up to do. Marco still has the turn so only one new turn but can also give a quick overview of the turns since BC Freedom was founded.

Turn 61: Rome decided to pillage my farm instead of rolling the dice to take the city. Thank goodness!

As a result, BC Freedom is founded T61!

And I have my rearguard off a Roman warrior, earning my first kill in this pitiful war

This is roughly the plan I've been following for the new city. My Trader escaped and is now running a route down to the Greek capital for +3 Icon_Gold and +1 Icon_Science I'm gonna need gold for sword upgrades. The plan is (now finished) to build out a Warrior before the borders pop to the Iron. Work the Tobacco tile for a few turns to speed up the border pop but I ultimately diverged from the spreadsheet since I suspected the border pop would resolve before the Warrior finishing and screw it up. Just having a resource within your territory is apparently enough to ban building earlier units. Thanks Firaxis crazyeye

(ignore a lot of the superfluous detail - I didn't feel like fully stripping down to a template at the time)

Luckily the Palace warped to the new city before yields were applied so we got some extra of everything out of it when Rome took Saunders mischief

Also! I bought a Great Prophet!

I forgot GPs can't move the turn you get them when they're purchased so I got my nice little invulnerable scout a turn too late to play footsie with the Legions. Laozi was stuck in Saunders when it fell so warped over to BCF. I didn't want to run directly over to Rome and give away my position so I tried to have him run south down around CATS but the terrain and traffic jams made it a futile move as Rome found me before I could even pop up from the south frown

So. Bad news time. Look back over at the GPP screencap. ...Greece has stopped their GG generation again. Originally I thought this would be fine and dandy since we were only at the Classical Era. NOPE!

Fuck banghead fuck banghead fuck banghead

So yeah, Greece (inadvertently, I assume) handed Rome the only GG for many moons to come. Greece, you were supposed to get it and come save me! cry or at least beat up the Romans and take my land from them, that'd work too, I suppose twirl

On the plus side, this means that buying the GP means Rome will get very limited use out of stealing my Holy Sites. And Russia didn't even take Jesuit Education! I can't find the screenshot just now but they took Choral Music and Church Property. I don't really believe I'll get back into a place where I could found a Religion but hey, JE is waiting for us if I do rolleye I damn well wasn't going to found a Religion for Rome so Laozi is just a scout for the foreseeable future

Whatever. I'll have two swords soon. If I'm reading my C&D screenshots correctly, Rome has one of their DoF's expiring around T67 and the other around T70. Hopefully they have some of their invasion force looping back home since if I can hold out just a little longer maybe someone will pounce...

Also not pictured: my Archer fled to the frozen north by Yerevan and got cut down by a GG-boosted Legion frown Oh well, it'll be slower to rejoin the offensive at least...

Which brings us to T66 in the previous post. Just finished a Warrior and have 170 Icon_Gold to upgrade the pair of them. But I also want to buy a tile for an Encampment to Hojo-chop some Walls up. Even if Rome brings up their Ram, it provides some temporary defensive strength and some arrow fire. Also pretty sure Rams don't get GG movement bonus so it could buy some extra time. I buy the tile and go around asking everyone for a small loan (1gpt for 20Icon_Gold) to afford upgrading my 2nd Warrior. What, y'all don't want Rome to get their new cities out of Occupation do you? wink

Encampment tile perhaps not the most responsible use of other peoples' money, given that the timeframe has good odds of it being futile, but it's something to try. And trying to stay alive is all I can do at this point.

T67:

sid plz

...

banghead
So one consequence of playing it safe and getting the Warrior before the border pop is I had to buy the tile before the border popped too. Which apparently caused the governor to flip the fuck out and decide Iron is stupid. Because non-deterministic border expansion is a wonderful feature, right guys?

So at this point I think I'm through. Time to return peoples' money and accept my fate. Only Russia agreed to the deal as presented anyway. Greece sent it back as 20Icon_Gold for 2gpt, which, sure, I'll take it. Likely gonna give it back but lets see what options we have...

and then the Royal Fucking Bank shows up with a counteroffer yikes

England taking their historic role of propping up proxies crazyeye  Seriously, though, thanks for pulling my ass out of the fire here.

With those monies I buy the damn Iron, mine it, and upgrade both Warriors. They upgrade in place so the scratched one can  heal up at the same time. Rome has their GG and a Legion right outside. I'm pretty sure we can tank a hit so it depends on if they have another Legion out in the fog... If for some reason they only brought one, I might be able to off the bastard and buy time to finish the Walls. Fingers crossed smile

Ok this is my shorter update for the night so let's get it out of the way! We survived to the Turn 70 milestone!

So, T68 greets us with bad news in that the Romans are using their "ooo look at me I have a diplo slot and a government that actually generates Envoy points" abilities* to turn Amsterdam against me, resulting in a -4gpt loss shakehead They also used their General to move onto the Forest and attack the city from there

*(tongue firmly in cheek, I think I'm the only one still without PP)

Our scout prophet spies some reinforcements a couple turns off so I decide to slug the jerk, have some time to heal and will get a promotion out of it.

Also the city grew so, in accordance with the plan, I move the citizens over to no-growth max-cogs to get the Encampment churned out ASAP

T69 I appear to have chased off the one Legion but two more show up with another coming up back by my home territory

Not much happens, just promote and heal up a bit.

T70: Bad goes to worse, they've got their Ram coming up. Got a Legion going around the north but I'm not as worried about that with all the hills and forests to my northwest they won't be able to swing all the way around without stopping on the tobacco. On the plus side, the Greeks have an army now. I can only hope they're coming to help me...

Scout is pretending to be useful

I'm only paying limited attention to the wider world at this point. Limited payoff, especially when I've got the Vikings game competing for my time. I have been watching for Rome's DoFs to expire, though. Arabia's change of management successfully negotiated such rant And if I'm not mistaken one of Russia or England renewed!! Argh Give it another 2-3 turns and if CMF is still friends with Rome    (and if I'm still alive) I may DoW them to get my income back into the positives. Could be the Russians renewed and are body-blocking but I don't foresee that being enough to stop Rome running away with it when I'm gone. Without an ocean separating them from Rome like in PBEM 11 I don't think they'll be able to peacefully get up to Cossacks. They do have the 2nd-best score.

Still kicking over here. First some quick catchup on T71 & T72

Japan inaugurates the 8th Decade by chopping out a Encampment - with Hojo leading our motley gang of survivors in using the remaining materials to construct a final redoubt, translating loosely into English as "Helm's Deep" (creative writing has never been my strong suit rolleye)

(I would have preferred to chop the flatland forest but it was too dangerous to get over there)

The rest of short turn consists of Laozi daring a Legion to hit him and our swordsmen skirmishing with a Legion that was hanging out too close to the walls. It already had a promotion so redlining it should be enough to chase it away. The fewer units we have to deal with at once the better.

Sadly the Romans respond by slaying our brave promoted sword. Hannibals Oligarchic stormtroopers were just too much, even as green troops. The nation mourns while silently slightly grateful for fewer mouths to feed.

But wait, the injured unit has not withdrawn sufficiently! Evidently they underestimate the prowess of Hojo! Our revenge is Pyrrhic but much appreciated.

Some of our captains propose a surgical strike at Hannibal himself but with the turn's loss we cannot spare our remaining sword. The Romans' Battering Ram is mysteriously absent as our surviving sword buckles down to await the onslaught. Another plan floated is to immediately begin preparations to migrate again, but it is decided that there is no time and we must instead train everyone we can in the defense of our holdout. (Also MilTrad will take almost as long and we can switch back into Colonization after it completes)

There are rumors that Gorgo of the Greeks is gathering her host, though dread has become such a constant companion that we dare not assume they will be riding to our aid.

But then hold on to your butts, folks, because holy shit

Something something dawn of the 73rd turn look to the... south? Eh, whatever, close enough. The Greeks have brought us back from the brink of extinction!
multidance
They have even brought wagons carrying much needed food and supplies!

And there will soon be more where that come from available to our merchants

An emissary from Trajan arrives as well, bearing vile epithets about our ancestors and derisively spits at the feet of our great Hojo.

After the bitter laughter dies down in the rudimentary court-in-exile chamber, Hojo declares that if the Destroyers would have peace, they must first return his ancestral home and all the lands in between

(I had to restrain myself really hard from demanding St Gloriana as well. I wanted to signal in some way that I'm not (only) playing spoil-the-leader and am willing to experiment with a partial peace. I still don't expect them to accept popcorn )

Our scouts, meanwhile, are unable to find any trace of the Roman army that so recently threatened to snuff us out. The Greek troops in the area bear the signs of battle but, with their foreign tongues, we cannot decipher how many Romans fled or met their ends.

(Yerevan remains unallied for now)

Additionally, a great "Harrumph" is heard to go up from the band of Russian explorers who have been watching the siege. We can only guess at what it will mean.

And, with that, I'll leave y'all with the scores and a quick look at the strange corruptions constructions the Romans are imposing on the homelands

Still kicking but not much going on. I keep dipping my toe into sending my remaining Swordsman east with the Greek army but the Romans are hiding up in the northern wilds while Greece pushes on to my old lands. Alhazard also declined to renew our Declaration of Friendship so I suspect they intend to take my cities from Rome and dodge the occupation penalty. Probably finish me off at their leisure. I had diverted a few turns into catching up on tech (Japan developed Pottery on T78! lol bang ) and building a 2nd Sword to free one up to go east - but now back on Shipbuilding/Settler to flee the continent before the backstab

The question now is whether to sign peace with Rome if Greece does get Saunders occupation-free, hmm...
