I am a bit optimistic, they try something new.
Here everyone is a bit like an old grandpa, it peaked with CIV IV. Nah, CIV VI was better and CIV V was not as bad. I would say: VI>IV>II>V>I>III I disliked CIV III with a vengenance. 
Didn't play 1 and 2.
I would go 3>6>4>5. The launch of 5 was really bad. Patches and exp packs helped but they were effectively a beta version of 6. So, I give very little credit to that. I really dislike the city maintenance system of 4 so it is second worst. 3 and 6 are both good games. I just like 3 better. Yes they tried new things but the vast majority of the new stuff was busywork that didn't add to gameplay quality. And because no real attention was paid to balance, all too often you were either rofl stomping the opposition or working with too hard of a start to play out of.

5 going from stacks of doom to tactical combat was what broke my interest. I tried 6 some, even did a few epics, but it never clicked. Only way they would get me to try again is stacks of doom. That won't happen, as 1 unit per hex was meant to reduce the amount of pieces dealt with.
Stacks of doom were, amusingly enough, the exact reason I never vibed with IV. I only really dug into Civ when it went 1UPT.
