Yeah, this really isn't enforceable ground. And until we get to see his thread (or maybe not even then, depending on what he shared), the motivations are all speculation. But it still made me wonder about the distinction we put on what is appropriate to play out a civ in a losing position and what is considered inappropriate.
Of course, now I remember getting blasted by some players in a past game for doing exactly what I thought was the best way to put up a dogged defense in a lost position, so it's not entirely unknown territory... (And yes, that last sentence is entirely self serving pity, but I'll try to keep it to just that one sentence. )

This game is very violent. Alhazard just lost a quarter of his total power to DZ, and Discord just sniped a Gavagai city. It's gotta be a fun story out there.
I just found this old gem of an interview, with Soren Johnson talking to Brian Reynolds(!): https://www.idlethumbs.net/3ma/episodes/...tauri-show
It really solidifies my impression that Civilization 4 is the most narrative-supporting game of the Civ series. Soren really did live and breathe SMAC, and the way that the game is built just encourages these stories in ways that Civ1,2, 5, and 6 just don't.

Thanks for this, Comm. I've always been impressed with everything I've heard Soren say. SMAC's tech quotes get a lot of well-deserved love, but I don't think Civ4's get enough. Yeah, Nimoy's delivery is excellent, but the quotes themselves are, as far as I can remember, flawless, running the gamut from silly to dire without ever feeling out of place. Other games have not always succeeded in this...

Any in game updates?
Objectives as follows:
1. Don’t give up anything to Donovan.
2. Hurt Donovan and make him suffer.
3. Don’t give anything to Superdeath, who only didn’t Donovan us just because he Donovaned his other
neighbor first. These are going to be difficult objectives, and if I succeed…I’m grinding my nose into dull
and grim turns for the next three months. Ho boy.
How are the objectives going?

How are the objectives going? Sorry for the slow response, it’s been a little dull. I’m here in my little corner while Donovan feeds more and more of his empire into his own war machine and Superdeath focuses on his preferred south victim. Rather than stuff my hands in my ears and pretend, I’m focusing on making it to Construction and catapults. Going to maul anyone who hits us in this little empire.
It’s 1AD, a traditional time to update things. There’s not much to say about the remnant of my game, just massing spears and axes and a few archers/chariots. No sane world would have Donovan attacking next turn when our treaty runs out, but I’ve learned not expect sanity from those quarters. Over half of my economy is in the northern two cities:
…so what the hell. Incoming mass whips again as I’m sure Donovan is about to wreck himself even worse.

Donovan was up to war-peace, which seems nice a peaceful, but then he crams this nasty little bugger into my face.
I really really dislike Donovan's spite here. Kind of hope we can help Alhazard kill him.
