Wow, this was really a bad pick.
I really like the reading the train of thought of people playing the CIV 4 PB where their starts are known to them before the game begins. If Cornflakes has the map ready (and the time) besides the strategic resource distribution, what do you guys think about asking him to post us our respective starting positions so we can start planning.
Now that I think about it, I do not know if the Worldbuilder allows for this detailed selection of starts for certain CIVs or if it just enables selecting the starting positions and the CIVs which then are randomized onto the starts

It is Thursday and we wanted to have a map and turn order going last weekend I think.
I apologize profoundly but I will bow out of this game. I wanted a fast paced game and we are already 4-5 days behind.
No offense, if someone wants a dedlurker, give me a call.

Was Civ pick method and result the real reason for dropping out?
Set up time has little to do with the turn pace once the game is going (in fact better to take a little extra time getting set up right to ensure smooth turn pace and commitment). You are 2 days from having a map ... except that if there are only 4 players now the map is useless so I can’t continue working on it until I know for sure. I’m at work for the next 8 hours, so if you get this figured out I’ll continue. Otherwise I’m on hold.

Is this because you had to pick between Sweden and Canada? If it is, I don't care if you select any from the remaining ones, as long anybody else doesn't have a problem with it.

I do not mind if Archduke picks something different.
However I do not believe the delay is that critical, there are 2 main reasons:
- waiting for Ioan's answer (who is not playing but hopefully dedlurking me)
- Cornflakes needing some more time to finalize the map (thank you again Conrflakes for volunteering to create the map)
Both should not have any impact on the ingame turn pace and I actually prefer the setup to be good over rushing the start. I suggest we already create the PYDT, this has to be done by Ichabod if I remember correctly, no?

I will do it when we figure out if we'll have a game or not.
I don't mind if Archduke picks another Civ.
I'm eager to start the game, so I'll play my turns quickly when they come!

Given that the whole point of the civ pick list was to play the "bad" ones I am going to go with the assumption that Archduke is not bailing because of the civ he's wound up with. After all, if he didn't want to go with this concept he would have said so earlier in the process.
I fully agree with the contentions that the delay in setup is not indicative of actual turn around times and, if anything, that time was spent making sure we were in a position to have good turn times. From this viewpoint the decision to not play is...curious.

I don't think turn times are going to be much of an issue in this game. We seem to have a good line up with no one really sharing
tight overlapping play windows. My average turn time is 1 hour and 9 minutes for 815 turns played. Unless I am driving home (hour plus commute) from work (not like it will happen again anytime soon), I play my turn immediately after I get the notification.

Maybe I overreacted a little, but I really do not want to invest time in another PBEM which dissolves like 17 where I invested quite some time into analysis and dedlurking.
And who are we kidding, if we add Canada/Sweden to this, and the game is already lagging a bit, meh.
Add to this that I may want to invest time over the next months into something else, I think bowing out is the right call.
