Oh and in addition to that. Please hover over your best trade route, when doing the screenshot. This shows the actual calculation of the specific trade route, which gives a further insight.

Jowy, I'll certainly be looking at things with that in mind. But my opinion right now is that it's too strong in all situations

I would say that I think it's a bit OP too, though like any trait it can be a bit situational. It's hard for me to get into specifics here as I've got my own game that's quite early. How OP may depend on your view of Financial in CTH (jury is maybe still out), but I'm pretty confident it's straight up significantly better than Financial. To me, that either means Financial is trash, or Protective is OP. My gut says it's the latter, but I could be wrong. Also worth considering that it takes a lot less effort in terms of builds and worker turns to get Protective's commerce than it is for Financial.
I'd estimate in an average game it might take like 200 turns for Financial to outdo Protective in raw commerce gained above a replacement trait, and Protective's non-commerce bonuses are better. Adjust that ballpark estimate up or down depending on the map and terrain. That's also just raw commerce output, and it doesn't take into account that 1 commerce on T10 is much more valuable than 1 commerce on T100. Pindicator's suggestion seems interesting to me, because it would cause Protective to fall off in the mid-game a lot more, which it probably needs. I really like the trade route bonus core concept as it's both thematically good while making the trait interesting, but I agree it's a bit overtuned.

Charriu do you use the TradeYieldModifiers under traitinfos to make the bonus, or is this a different calculation

No, I've built my own. That TradeYieldModifier didn't exactly do what I wanted to do with Protective. Also thank you all for that great feedback. I will work on the next major release after PB52 is done or after I'm out of that game (no this is not an invitation to kill me there ). Reason for that is that right now most of my attention goes to that game and I want to collect more data on other issues of the mod, but rest assured that Protective will be addressed.

One issue with making it only for internal trade routes is that it would stay overpowered in an always war game. and, frankly, having it being on internal isn't really that big a deal for a normal FFA - in a FFA, you have to balance foreign trade routes with having units in your borders, watching what you do. Closing borders can easily be a sign of a war about to come.
I like the idea of better trade routes for protective, btw, thematically. Other options might be: reduce the bonus to 50%, only apply the bonus if someone builds walls, only apply the bonus on 1 trade route in a city - dunno what other things there might be. I don't know how hard any of those are to implement

I guess this is more a BUG mod thing, but I was thinking about the possibility of implementing GNP scrying in the UI? It's (almost) always possible to know how many people you've met have researched each tech you have the ability to research, it's just busywork to figure it out.

This would be great! It levels the playing field between casual players and those with time and energy to gather data and crunch numbers every turn.

I'm actually one of those casual players, so please explain this a bit more for me.
If I understand you correctly the only information you get from this is how many players have researched a specific tech, but not exactly who, right?
In that case a number on the tech in the tech advisor would most likely be the best indicator?
