Really? Well that's news to me. I just assumed Calendar lets you BUILD the plantation, not enjoy it's effects.

In other words - yes, there's a large economic benefit to securing one economic trade route... But getting a second city on an island doesn't actually help does it?

Well there's only a certain number of Overseas routes available from 1 city. So 2 overseas cities doubles the number of overseas routes we could have. I think. I'm hazy on TR mechanics still!

That was my impression too. In my mind i thought you could conquer a city from a civ that had Calendar and part of the bonus was getting to use their calendar resources. But, I can't actually say I knew that for sure. So, bummer on being wrong.

EDIT: wooops... double posted.

Does anyone know exactly how this works and/or know a link where I can find an explanation? I don't even know what the limit of routes you can get from one city is. If this is true, then yeah we'll want to settle on as many 1-tile islands as possible.

Yeah there has to be some limit. It's not like we can build one city overseas and then have 15 cities on the mainland getting TRs with it! I would guess it's it can only give as many as it can receive. T-Hawk, come to the rescue!

Ok yeah the Calendar thing is true - just ran a quick test. It didn't even show up on the city screen. Well size 8 will have to be the cap. Calendar is going to be a hugely important tech btw - I count 5 calendar resources surrounding us. Once we get that, we can grow quite large.

Yeah I have no idea what it is, so if anyone smarter than me knows, please tell! In the meantime I'll do some searching online and see if I can figure it out.

One island city can supply one trade route each to all your other cities. Once you start having cities with multiple routes (i.e. after Currency) you ideally want correspondingly more island cities.

Okay got it, thanks. Well in that case we're definitely settling on several islands. For the town we'll want to ferry over a couple units and pillage it down first. That city could be a pain to defend from Lewwyn - that's some reason for Metal Casting actually for Triremes.

An island city can supply a better trade route to every single one of your homeland cities. There's no limit; Dazed I have no idea where you got that idea. smile So one island city ASAP and a second at Currency always pays off. Two more with the Great Lighthouse, naturally.

Re Academy, of course it doesn't help much early in an economic crash, but you might wish you had it pretty soon after you recover with courthouses and Bureaucracy. Up to you.

All resources can only be connected once you have the technology for its natural improvement. I think this may have been a rule applied in some patch; I remember that forting Oil (revealed at Scientific Method) to hook it up early (before Combustion) was a standard play in earlier days.

Yeah so settling on that town (and pillaging it down first) is very high priority right now.

I'll need to think about this. It's short-term vs long-term. Dazed, any thoughts on this? Well, this isn't something that needs to be decided right this second - we can decide much closer to when we actually get Currency - by then we'll have a better picture of where we stand in comparison to everyone else.
