Well you would of course lose a substantial amount of the emotional beats if you just watch rather than participate through play, but that's true of any story in a gaming medium. Otherwise, sure, it's definitely worth understanding where the series is coming from, especially if you are considering getting the sequel. There is quite a bit of lore and backstory to dig into.
I fully expect there to be 3D tactical maps. Whether there will also be a physics engine is an open question.

Quote:2) Fully 3D tactical map and positioning. Attacks can come from any direction and you have to pay more attention to your flanks because they are much more expansive. Again this is more important in HW1 and Cataclysm than in Homeworld 2, because....
3) Homeworld 1 and Cataclysm used physics engine to determine whether shots hit and where. As a result, flanking attacks meant something (armour stronger on front), big guns had trouble hitting small moving targets, etc. Homeworld 2 abandoned this for a rock-paper-scissors style dice roll, which was much quicker to implement and kept frame rates up in big fights, but meant things like formations were largely eye-candy rather than actually meaning something in a fight.
Ok, I can definitely see this mattering. I didn't watch the trailer - any idea whether Homeworld 3 will revive the meaningful 3D map?
On appreciation I'd say yes
On the 3D map I definitely hope so.

Pushing up, and pushing in. Let's see if Alhazard, despite having regional top power, actually is a threat to DZ or if he's a paper tiger.
Boy I want to split DZ with Al.

Are those galleys loaded with units or are they just for show?

Al is a paper tiger. Writing off *that* force.

Unfortunately, not really.
Donovan got my army in a bad spot and could have wiped it out, so I had to peace. Regentman and Alhazard were each able to snipe cities taking advantage of his distraction, but the very very intact Incan army means he can basically ruin one guy who pushes in too hard.
