[Spoiler]PB44 Lurker Thread: Nostalgia Edition

This is getting very spicy now. If gav pulls astro and out of nowehere burns half of Alhazard's cities, the game would be over that very turn.

Seems a shame to have a game decided on such a technicality. Technically Krill said to try out the script. Calling this Cylindrical is stretching it really far though. Either a map is Cylindrical, Toroidal or flat and should be labled as such. Saying that it’s Tilted Cylindrical is not a normal description and should have been clarified.

I dunno - it seems like Gavagai thinks it should be made clear and it's their game.

Something like "It seems like not everyone understands the implications of this being a map from a Tilted Axis script. Unlike a normal pangea script, where the water wraps E-W, on this, it wraps N-S."

Yeah I would expect the players to understand that.

What makes you think Alhazard doesn't/won't know what's coming? He'll see Gav get compass/optics and should prepare some countermeasures. Even if he hasn't spotted the world wrap he knows galleons can hit anywhere.

I'm surprised it took Gav this long to realise what the world wrap is, I guess it's possible that Alhazard hasn't figured it out yet either, but IMO it was much more unfair for Gav/SD/Com and especially Donovan to be piggy-in-the-middles with no safe backlines. The players were told what map script they're on and if they click on the northern or southern edges of the minimap it should be obvious.

Outright saying it feels like leading by the nose. If you really want to do something perhaps a nudge about when/how Alhazard is going to fight Gavagai might get him to realise it for himself.

Out of respect for the long history of the players on this forum and my recent arrival I would not presume to interfere, just give my 2 cents. I think there are good arguments for and against and will leave the decision to someone more experienced with this type of situation.

General thoughts, as someone who used to make a variety of well-received maps, but who's map-making philosophy appears to not be the way the majority of RB maps are played or wanted these days:

1) Krill did not need tonbe more explicit about why he thought players should role example maps, but it would have been polite and I would have done that.

2) The players absolutely should have realized what a tilted axis meant. They had opportunities and even a recommendation to figure this out on their own before the game (plus it's in the name!) as well as multiple ways in-game to figure this out.

3) In a balanced or handmade map, the circumnavigation peak would have been a massive mistake. But with the requests given, it was entirely reasonable for Krill to leave it there. It's easier to fix than Donovan starting with two different players needing to go through him to win, sure, but it is also many-fold less important. It's not like Gavagi has a one-sided invasion route without ocean-going vessels.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Looking at Al's minimap you can see the N-S wrap, so it's a massive oversight on his part if he hasn't realised. He also has no idea what Gav is doing tech-wise, maybe after (if) he sees Education being bulbed he'll guess, but I doubt it.

If, as it seems likely, Gav does get to burn Al's cap + other core cities with Galleons, I don't think he can blame the mapmaker like Gav is suggesting. There are/will be plenty of signs for Alhazard, and if he misses them that's on him.

I don't think he hasn't realized. He's been doing due diligence to this game I feel.

From his thread:
"Falling behind in tech. This the big one because of the potential for naval attacks although I find Gav's tech choices during his GA curious."

Doesn't mean Gav can't burn Al's capital anyhow.

He's realised that Gav is going for Liberalism (latest post), but hasn't thought that Astro is a possible target for Lib, so by the time that happens it might well be too late.
