At this point we've correctly hit 7/8 of our words and red team has hit 4/9, so we're in really good shape, even if we end up pointing at a red word here.
DOG could be a red Weed word, so I'm not too eager to point there. I assumed that all birds had Talons, including ROBINs, but if the group is convinced that only birds of prey do, then I'll go along. HAND doesn't particularly speak to me, but I like it more than anything left on the board. Regardless, we should definitely point at something, however tempting it might be to say pass and wait for a 1-clue.

Good point on DOG being a risk.
I think that the HAND thing that was at the back of my mind may have been a specific reference - the classic Doctor Who episode "The Talons of Weng Chiang". This definitely involved a hand with talons, but it's pretty niche. I still feel that ROBIN could have beeen clued differently but am happy to consider it. I'm pretty sure that it technically doesn't have talons, but this isn't a quiz. As for anything else, the only other possibility I can see is some link Talon->Thorn->ROSE, but that feel's like a stretch. I'm travelling today and may not have Internet access - if in doubt, ask random.org: worked last time!

Let me explain the Weed clue. At the beginning of the game I saw that QUEEN/JACK/CROWN would be a relatively easy trio to clue, as was GRASS/ROSE/FIELD for a plant clue. The remaining words however weren't so easy to clue together, so I'd have to try and extend one of my 3 clues to 4. The former couldn't really be changed though, moving away from King would risk losing JACK, and trying to extend the clue further would only run into HEAD. Maybe it was the fact that GRASS and PIPE were together at the top, but I thought if I clued Weed, then not only would I get the plant definition I wanted, but I could also include PIPE with them. I wasn't that familiar with other Weed words, but if I lead with it it would surely work out.
Of course this didn't turn out so well, as I completely blanked on the possibility that there would be quite a few other words related to Drugs, or the fact that the team would focus more on them rather then the plant definition. So yeah,  move by me, I'll accept that.Fortunately most words considered were grey, so that misstep initially didn't matter too much. There was only 1 word considered that was blue, and thankfully it wasn't guessed on the first turn. With that in mind, my next clue was King 3, to get QUEEN, JACK, CROWN and, most importantly, not HEAD. If I wanted HEAD, it would've been super easy to go for King 4, yet as soon as JACK was pointed this fact was just forgotten about. Bob's initial post on the clue was 100% correct, my reaction from that point on was neatly summarized in my last post. Well done Azoth for ending it in 2 even with a bit of help of us. I thought that last clue was a little risky personally, I had no way to end the game in 3 unless ROBIN was picked which almost happened (would've gone Gravestone 3 which might've worked). I'm also not sure 100% certain that last clue was legal, but since I didn't draw attention to it at the time it's my fault for not objecting to it (I'm happy to discuss this further in the rules thread). I'm curious, if we didn't give you HEAD what was your plan Azoth? Sorry Bob, I don't think I can let you live that one down. |
