Well, whenever we do continue my preferences haven’t changed - fusion, kinetics only, cats or rocks. Now that I’m freed from grad school applications for a bit (and less burnt out from rotp in general) I can go stare at fusion’s settings to get an idea of what I want there.
Surprise! Turns out I'm a girl!

That sounds good to me! I still haven't installed fusion mod, but looking over some of the documentation, I'd tentatively suggest something like playing against the Roleplay AI, maybe on "normal" difficulty since we'll be playing a variant and it should be a big step up from Modnar? And it feels like the 'coids are a consensus pick for our missile-based Rock ships?

Okay, I downloaded the mod, looked over some of the options, and played fiftyish turns of a test game - enough to make me realize I must have underestimated the improvements made in that AI over the base/Modnar/rookie versions. If we play against Roleplay AIs, I'd definitely suggest a harder difficulty - probably Hardest.
It looks like there are some neat options to play with too, but there's one I can't seem to find: Is there some way to restore the Human diplomat to the original RotP artwork?

I have also gotten the mod downloaded and set up. That is a LOT of options.

That did it - thanks so much! (Also, welcome to Realms Beyond - and thanks for all the work you did on the mod!)
(And though I've let it go without saying, huge thanks to Ray F too, not only for stopping by and answering RotP questions, but for all the effort, energy, and resources that went into the game!)

Haha no, I was extrapolating too much from a single brief test game. I finally got around to trying another test game on Roleplay/Hardest, and the Silicoids had three worlds by something like turn 12, and every habitable planet in the galaxy was claimed before turn 30. Exponential growth with nearly time and a half production per turn for AIs that commit all their early resources to it is no joke. (Of course, part of the problem is the star layout; Impossible Orion AIs would have done the same with their free colony ships; I was playing on a Micro Square galaxy with no void, and the result was too compact.) That doesn't mean I can't win, but that remains to be seen.
There are fortunately a lot of options in Fusion though, so apart from Roleplay/Hard or even /Normal, we could for instance play against something like Modnar with a custom difficulty level beyond "Hardest" - if people are still interested!

Hi RefSteel! Those super-fast expansion rocks sound scary. Do the AIs get free colony ships in Remnants, like they do in the original game? It sounds like they must, from what you are describing.
Anyway, count me as interested in another SG. We can figure out what settings and difficulty we want to try, and if it turns out to be too hard...well, what is the worst that could happen?

The team ragequits and Ref spends far too much time playing on on his own?
It may have looked easy, but that is because it was done correctly - Brian Moore
