Well, two reasons:
Firstly, if Rusten made it to destroyers that early with such a huge factory lead, there was no way he wasn't winning. I saw Hitru would be able to raze coasts, but I figured it was only going to slow Rusten down.
Secondly, I could see a world where the two titans got into a stalemate and I could take the whole Super-Savant continent. It seemed like the only way to advance into a winning shot position, I needed more land.

Looks like we both came to the same conclusion on different sides of the map. I knew I couldn't beat either of them straight up but I might have had a chance to expand if they got into a grinding war.

FURTHER URGENT QUESTION: IS GAVAGAI NOT-FOOD-TIER ENOUGH TO HAVE HIS BIGGER NEIGHBOR WITH A HUGE FREE ARMY NOT BE ABLE TO EAT HIM?

There are parts of me that wonder about this hinge-point. I think the free army lets me eat Gavagai, and then Beardbeard with his shrine. But Gavagai never goes gentle into that good night, I'm not sure that I win in any amount of time.
