If you think about tech rate Frederick is probably one of the strongest guys here with ORG + buffed up PHI.

With Mali I think we go with Bismarck, get early granaries + pottery and go from there towards forges. That is safe and good choice.

If Pro is good them IMP+PRO is the strongest trait combination IMO. Could pair that with America for good draftable muskets and some cheap GP play via library?

Huh, is that deer 1E of the settler on a forest or not? It's hard to tell with the resource bubble where it is.

Yeah, and this has been my default.

I have been messing around with some Celt openings simply because they let you tech AH first. In turn you can grow to size 3 before starting the first settler. However, there's still too much tech to get BW before that first settler, so I think this only makes sense if you go Agriculture > AH > Wheel > Pottery and then get Bronze Working / bank on chariots for initial military. That said, this doesn't really appeal to me.

Stuff like this tempts me greatly. I'll see how the opening turns for Charlie of America play out, and if it's satisfactory then I might succumb. I've always been a johnny gamer at heart.

Based on yields, grass deer to the south has a forest, while plains deer to the east has not.

Imp/Pro has nice synergy in city spamming not tanking our eco that badly even if we work mostly foodhammer tiles. Currency becomes the most important tech target in that case

PRO really likes an island city or two.

You could even take advantage of those person-less GP with an early Merchant to keep the research burning...

I admit, I'm starting to lean Charlemagne of America.  I'll try to make a final call in the next 12 hours, but please keep the ideas coming.

Yeah, I'm having considerable difficulty with the early game. You can research Hunting > Mining > BW and grow the settler at size 3 to get BW to finish timed with the completion of the settler end of t27. Lets you revolt into Slavery and all is fine, except the worker can't really do anything but chop trees or farm grassland tiles - we'd have to hope we have a good city #2 location nearby. But then there isn't too much point in rushing out a 2nd city with PRO if you can't connect it, and we've not settled on a river so we need to have Wheel in order to connect to our 2nd city.

So we can either delay BW and have Wheel, letting us get the +4c of the 2nd city right away - or we can go Charlie of Mali and not worry about opening techs at all.

Then I think either Charly or Bismarck of Mali is the way to go. It feels weird not to go with IND leader with Mali but if you think Charly is too good to pass either is fine with me

I should test this to make absolutely sure, but I'm nearly certain that a city settled on a lake into which a river is flowing has a trade connection with anything founded on that river (so long as the path of city-to-lake-to-riverside-tiles-including-new-city is in your culture once the new city goes down).  Of course, that's only relevant if there's a good enough, close enough second city site on that river (or a lake or sea into which it flows, if any) that you actually want to take that option.  So it would be a gamble, but not an impossibility.
