The issue to my eye is that anytime you introduce multiple continents, any eliminations get drastically less likely as the AI is so poor at naval invasion. But that has knock-on effects, such as stupid eternal wars becoming much more likely too. To me, the downsides are more important than the potential upside.

Islands raise the risk long-term survival of pointless remnants (fun to see as a rare artifact of closed borders, but not, I suspect as a regular feature), with the ongoing problem of a potentially leading civ being dragged down by war-weariness, or unable to use its existing army because it won't declare a second war until the hated enemy is dead. It might be interesting to try different map types with a hand-picked selection of leaders as exhibition games, but committing to it for a season feels risky.
It may have looked easy, but that is because it was done correctly - Brian Moore
As I said during the announcement in stream random.org is more than happy to be back. I'll curate the choices, eliminating any obviously stupid results, like turn 20 victory picks.

The words "exhibition game" gave me an idea. I understand that Sulla does not want to use mods as a regular feature but how about one exhibition game using AI mod? Let's say, replaying the final game on the same map and with the same leaders but also with boosted AI? Just to see what kind of difference would it make?

Thanks to Sullla for doing this once again. The games are always a lot of fun.
The leader draw was interesting. The seed system prevents a true "group of death" but we did see a group of protectives, which should be amusing. And the group of meh with one of the later games; at least one of those non-entities will finally get a win. Now to decide if I should submit my actual picks, or make them and submit the exact opposite. Based on previous seasons, I would get more points the second way.
Is there still time to join the fantasy league? I wanted to do so earlier but couldn't find where to!
One thing I'd quite like to see is a Classical Era start - maybe for the Wildcard game?
That's a built in option in Civ4, no mods required, and might improve AI performance slightly - they'll have all the basic worker and military techs. There should still be plenty of randomness between a Gandhi Aesthetics-first start and a Shaka Iron Working-first, not to mention the barbs will spawn Axemen and Spearmen straight away. You'd want to disable Choose Religions and bury the three early religions in the observer civ to keep things fair - otherwise three civs will randomly get a holy city in their capital! Might be nice to shake up the picking contest a bit, too. |
