Eh, not too bad; I'll be able to get a decent idea of which way the wind is going and adjust if needed.

Thanks Commodore, and esp. thanks to pindicator for his mapwork ... but where's my Fish!? splat

I guess I'm going to have to go with "Quest for the Fish" rather than "The Fish Strikes Back". Or maybe I can jump the Whale and skip to "The Voyage Home"?

Anyway, discounting the coastal tile bleed as I have been instructed, this is a start that leaves a lot of options open. Nice 4fh tile to build from (probably safe to assume everyone has similar), but only one pre-calendar resource for improving so really only 1 tech needed in the first 3. I wonder if there's an argument here for Settler-first? Probably not unless picking IMP, but something to keep in the mix.

My concern early would be having the Worker run out of things to do; after the Corn you need to chop before anything can be Mined, so BW becomes an early-game priority. China's Ag/Min start would ensure Worker-first never runs out of things to do; CKN are still a great UU despite a slight nerf and the Pavilion is still meh. But if everyone's start is like this then it's unlikely China gets down to me.

So assuming China is gone and we go with one of the options previously discussed (CRE/ORG or CHA/ORG), what then? Well CRE's accelerated 2nd-ring pop brings the Gems in improvement range, so maybe pairing The Wheel with either Ag/Min would work; that gives a few options: Babylon, Egypt(!?), France, Mali & Sumeria - decent selection, & many also have CHA synergies. Another option on the CHA side would be to start with Myst for the early Monuments and push straight for a religion ... so Inca. Another strong pick if available.

That's probably enough stream-of-consciousness for now; lots of fun options on the table so once the picks start falling should be able to pivot.

Still thinking about Settler-first though...

Your revised start:

Keep in mind that anything outside of the BFC is fair game to be changed. So in this case, don't count on the grassland gems being there in the final version. It might be, I kind of like it.

Thanks Pindicator.

Looking at this on a phone screen I see some changes:
  • No forest on Banana
  • Longer river
  • Sugar has been replaced by Cow

Last is the biggest change as it gives a second pre-calendar resource and therefore a second tech target.

That affects my previous thoughts, but not sure how. I won’t have access to anything to check until after I get back home on 7th. Picks may therefore stall on me until then.

After a bit of lurker discussion, the gems most definitely is going to be changed in some way between now and the game going live. Don't plan on it being available t0
