@Griselda,
Ah, you're paying for a second i.p. address... well yes a switch will work fine and you can use
(exactly) two computers. With the router you only need and pay for one i.p. address, but can use
as many computers as you want simultaneously. Only one at a time can act as a server on a given port/game. With no port forwarding your protection vs virus/attacks goes WAY up over the switch
configuration. To act as a server, you'll need to follow the suggestions of others and set up port
forwarding (or if you have a firewall setup you're comfortable with on the server, designate it as 'DMZ' for unlimited no-hassle serving)
@Pete,
With my company and friends we've had nothing but grieve with Earthlink. One friend got two *different*
viruses within a 40 min span from one logon. Another likewise got hit with one despite very little 'on' time. They both thought that getting hit with a virus (due to sloppy updating practices) was something only likely with cable, not dial-in. With Earthlink I would suggest that a software firewall (e.g. Zone Alarm) be used, and most definitely stay up-to-date with Windoze updates. (I'm equally sure you know this, but thought I would point it out for the sake of other Earthlink / dial-in users B) )
