Epic Eight - JAPAN

Great Game Snaproll and quite some steamrolling here thumbsup

Just a quick summary from me, I'm afraid. Still don't have regular internet access after moving house a few weeks ago, and I only finished playing yesterday.

In short, I expanded to 5 cities very quickly, making use of the Organised trait, hit China before he could get his Cho-ko-nus out, Rome in about 1200 and America in about 1600, then with half of the landmass sat back and teched my way out to a space race victory. No seriously hairy moments, and I launched in 1878.

I'll have more detail in future, I hope. It was a great game even though I didn't pay so much attention since I wasn't reporting, though.

Now I can FINALLY start reading all the other reports!

I liked your report thumbsup.

I'd have expected nothing less than a domination win from Japan, for sure Japan on a Pangea is the smoothest domination win by far, especially when combined with the Great Lighthouse. That was a great commerce graph as you built it.

If there was any civ I could've rolled (especially with the hindsight of seeing the map) it would've been Japan, to bust out from that little peninsula and conquer the world - and I miss organized, it's been so long since I've played a domination with that trait. It's just such a shame what AI Tokugawa does with his civ.

I agree. Samurai is a lethal UU and if you can get them early enough, they will be well promoted and just cut through everything in the middle ages. Being agressive just makes them even better as it opens up for a wider choice of advanced units out the door with Barracks.

Great Game Snap! And it sounds like you enjoyed immensely which is the most important part. You combined the Great Lighthouse with Org. trait beautifully and did what Toku does best. Congrats.

Blake is right, AI Toku is a shame, that is why a like random personalities. There is a serious advantage in "knowing" the AI personalities.

You did a great job in expanding to block Caesar and Mao and that was clearly a more agressive move than I dared. Also, taking out Rome and China was the natural thing to do with our start, but I still don't understand why Roosevelt first declared war on you twice and then voted for you in the UN?

Did you do anything to bring the relations back up after the second war, or will the AI vote for you out of fear? I'm guessing Hatty was you opponent and that maybe Roosevelt hated her even more, but surely then he would have abstained?

Great job on playing the traits and UU of Japan. Your initial city placement matches mine, but I have to ask. Why did you put Edo there and not 1N? In my game, Mao put a city on your spot, but I razed it with the intention of placing it back on the desert hill, claiming the remaining floodplain and one extra river grassland. Unfortunately, Saladin beat me to the spot and placed his (again) on the "wrong" tile.

I also had the Lighthouse/Colossus combo after "liberating" the former from Mao. With that, those fishing villages west and south of Kyoto more than payed for themselves and made the Japanese starting position, despite being short on resources, quite viable.

You also handled the dimplomatic situation nicely. Invading that far into Egypt without having Caesar on your side could have proved tricky. I don't know how your situation was with troops in your homelands, but you left quite a long border there for a while.

Good job, everyone! So far Japan is winning 4-0. thumbsup

Quite true. Going for (backdoor) Domination wouldn't been hard too. Building Tanks after the 2nd war with FDR I could easily take out FDR,Saladin and Lizzy (enough for backdoor domi) but I dislike War and especially modern war.

I don't understand it either. Both times shortly after we signed peace he came and offered Open Borders ,which I didn't accept after the second war, and resource deals. At the time of the UN-vote I didn't even have Open Borders with him and he still voted for me huh .

But then I didn't get his first wardeclaration either. At this time we had boni for the mutual war with Rome, OpenBorders, a Clam for Silkdeal and (since I was in no statereligion) no religious differences either. We didn't even have close Borders. The only minus I had was from my war with China with whom he shared Confucianism.
