Thanks for the info and opinions, Mardoc!
I will give KOTOR a try. It is certainly cheap enough that if I don't like it, there is little lost.
I played the X-Wing fighter sims a long long time ago. But I do not currently have a joystick on this machine, although I could always get one.... Those were fun games, although as usual the AI stunk. The "protect this suicidal madman" missions were horrific. But the other types of missions were usually a lot of fun. Just playing with the training courses was enjoyable.
The Lego games are fun. Cute, fluffy fun.

Edit: Hmmm, rephrase again.
You might get banned but the whole purpose of the post was to say that if Steam shut down, that's how you would bypass it if Valve didn't disable the Steam check in the DLL anyway. They'll probably ban you if they catch you but that's in the case that Steam is not defunct so I'm not advocating anything. I know how people have an incredibly annoying tendency to instantly moral high-ground software security issues but I'd wish that people in general would stop doing it whenever a security thing pops up damn the context.
Edit: I suppose I just assumed that was the context of the conversation wrongly. I went back and re-read it so like I said I DO NOT ADVOCATE THAT, I just said it to alleviate the 'STEAM WILL EAT MY GAMES IF IT DIES' line of reasoning. I keep forgetting I'm not on [H]ardForum and stuff and you're not all techheads -_-'

Yay!
The original KOTOR is still heralded as badass from Star Wars fans and several RPG gamers and just raw PC gamers alike. Heck, it spawned the whole Old Republic mythos of the modern Star Wars Extended Universe. So, it not only had solid mechanics as a RPG, it also was accessible to new players and had a huge amount of interesting backstory. Also, lightsabers.
KOTOR2 mostly is polarizing due to the glitchiness if I recall. And some odd choices in the mechanics. And unfinished story elements. There's a mod group or 2 still trying to fix it up, but last I heard they've stalled out.
And hey, Bioware got famous enough from KOTOR that it went on to make Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Well, that's debatable, but personally I see KOTOR as their big breakout game. Maybe it's also because it's the first of their games I played....
In other news, Shogun 2. Worth it?

I found a little gem on Steam yesterday: "Toki Tori"
Right now it's 75% off and costs a little over 1 Euro. At first it looked like a silly child game to me, but I quickly found out it's a very nice puzzle game in platform style with adorable graphics. For that price, it's a steal.

I thought you were refering to using dummy DLLs to get around the data mineing and other issues. My mistake. Steam might become evil later but no-one uses that arguement.

I like Toki Tori but I found that it had stability issues. Hopefully it is patched out by now.

Even though I don't like Steam much, I have to admit that these sales are pretty amazing. I bought Braid yesterday 75% off for $2.50 - at a price like that, you're getting your money's worth even if you never play past the loading screen. Super Meat Boy is on sale today for $7.50, which also feels like a great deal.

If you also look, Football Manager 2011 is on sale for $10. I picked it up earlier today myself.
