After trying a few things in the sandbox, I don't think EXP's fast first granary helps much. We just don't have enough happiness.

On the techs, I agree Agri/Wheel looks best for a Pottery first opening. Hunting feels like a luxury I'm not sure we can afford, and I don't really want to play Mongolia again so soon anyway. I think I like France the best, of the 4 civs available. Though I guess Eygpt's war chariot is still good.
I've been messing around with China too, to check out BW first. We can get 2 workers and the settler done by T19 at size 2 in that case, but we're still a couple of turns off Pottery for the FPs. We only have the 4 forests at our capital though, and no information about a second city yet. I think I'd be happier with France.
I'm still feeling ambivalent about the traits. I think the start probably favours Agr, Cha and Fin slightly. Agr for the 4 good tiles, Cha because we have so much food and no early happiness and Fin because we have the 2 flood plains. Cha could become pretty obsolete when we hit Calendar though as you mention. I don't really want Ind or Pro because of the lack of hammers here.
For Exp's granary, I was looking at getting it at size 3, or we might be able to get it out at size 2, improving the sheep first for a lot of overflow on the second worker. Then growing to 6 and whipping the settler(around T25 IIRC). We do probably need to find some happiness quickly though.
We could pick the civ first, if we don't care about the leader too much.

Yeah, I'm hesitant to chop multiple forests early since we only have the four.
If you made me choose, I'd go for Ragnar first, and plan to get an Agri/Wheel civ. (I think in addition to the ones you mentioned, Ottomans would have some merit in providing backup happiness.) I like Ragnar for several reasons. First, as you mentioned, our start seems well suited to both Agr and Fin. Second, I am curious about the strength of Agr and how it feels to play. Third, I am slightly concerned that Fin is underpowered (and that Org dominates it in the same category).
I'm also up for the other options you mentioned, e.g. France first or Boudica or an EXP leader.

Heh, that's the main reason I'm worried about taking Fin. Similar issue with Cha, which I find very hard to evaluate without having played it before. I'm happy to play either of them though and find out.
I'd like to go with France first. I have a clear preference for them, which is not really the case for the leaders. Then if Ragnar makes it back around to us, we can go with him.
Though, my biggest reason for choosing France over Egypt is that I think I'll get a chance to play with full strength war chariots some time.

Nice.

Yeah, the size 2 thing doesn't work. Size 3 is pretty good, sort of dependent on the fogged hill being grass and not plains though(mine it to finish off the Gran). Not a must pick though, and the earlier warriors we'd get otherwise might be useful if we delay Hunting so long.

Right, exactly.
I've been tending to get out several early warriors in recent games and been happy with the results. Being able to make correct expansion choices is worth a lot, and you need them later for military police anyway.

Still happy with Ragnar? I guess there's an argument to be made for not taking the third FIN leader of the game...

Yeah I'm still fine with Ragnar if you want him. I guess I'm good with Org, Cha or Exp either.
