[SPOILERS] HAK tries Civ5 for the first time before it becomes obsolete

They count all hill tiles as 1 movement tiles so that is correct.

So this time around, there was a ruins right under my settler. So I start off by getting 96 gold. And where I sent my warrior he no longer sees either ruins that he saw previously. So I get one now, rather than 2 known ones for later. Heh.

A couple turns ago I met a city state Milan. Last turn I met Nicolae during my turn. This turn I log in to him having declared war on me. Kinda odd...

Plus, he already has a more powerful Spearman. Anyway, I moved my warrior in a scouting arc only slightly different than I might have planned. It brings him a little closer to home, which is a good thing anyway. I went E-NE and will head to the NW and then further northward and circle back towards my capital after that clearing away the fog north of my capital.

Meant to take a screenshot, but it's late and was too tired to think about it before ending my turn.
I found a ruin with my exploring warrior, got me some Culture. And that allowed me to adopt Tradition. Was almost tempted by the one next to it, which I already forgot the name of, but figured my getting the 3 culture per turn in my capital is more important right now. Or something like that. I still don't really fully understand the whole traditions thing.
Yuri's scout has appeared near my city, so he has come from my north. So I apparently have him in my north and Nicolai to my west, along with the city state if Milan between us.

My worker finishes in 2 turns and I should have Calendar soon for improving all these spices around me. I'm trying to decide between Scout and Warrior as my next build, but will probably go Scout so that my Warrior can come home for protection.

Normally I go scout before worker on first build but with Nicolai being so aggressive early on I would probably choose a warrior instead of a scout because there's a real chance he gets close to your city with his spear and disrupts your worker.

So I haven't really had time for much reporting and also keep forgetting to take screenshots before I click end turn.  Today I remembered to take a couple.
First an image showing the bulk of what I've explored:

I've started trying to think about where I can put a city in the south.  As much as I'd really like to put on on that hill 2NE of where my warrior is, that would make it so I'd never be able to build a fishing boat to net those fish in that little lake.  So it's looking like my only option for a city down there is on that tundra hill 2NW of my warrior, such that the city connects both bodies of water.  No idea if that would make a good second city, but it's what I may do.
I just finished a Scout that is exploring eastward and will get a ruins next turn.  I'm building a Warrior now which would remain inside the city to protect it, and then building a Granary after that probably followed by a Settler.

I've already researched Calendar, so my worker will move to improve that SE Spices next (he just finished that farm on the grass).  I'm researching Animal Husbandry right now to find out where I might have some horses.  Debated about whether I should go for the tech to know where I might have some Iron first, and ended up deciding on Horses.  Then at some point need to get Masonry to improve that Stone.

I ended up going the basic Tradition, since I really don't know what I'm doing in regard to social policies.

Demos and other stuff are pretty poor for me.  I basically have no idea what I'm doing here.  LOL

When in doubt, always go full tradition first.
The 4 free aqueducts are probably the main thing, but the earlier border pops and capital enhancers are really useful too.

Not sure why you'd want to build 2NE of warrior? First off, that hill is the minimum distance away from your capital. As a general rule I'd probably want slightly wider spacing if going tradition. Now, minimum distance might still be ok if there are other reasons for consideration [such as netting those lake fish (which then probably would eventually be picked up by your expansion city since your capital can't build a lighthouse)], but just putting it out there.
Also, I don't really see any new luxuries picked up by plains hill city and that would always be my first and foremost concern in civ V.  Food is good and all, but a) fish isn't much food and require an otherwise worthless wb and b) to some extent you can alleviate food shortages by buildings/ trade routes (one reason why it's often a good idea to build a second city on the coast if you've already built one).

AH sounds good. Isn't it that tech that will let you improve those sheep as well?
Masonry I guess is ok, but nothing special. You only have the one stone right? In that case I might want the ability to trap the deer more. Once you've got a granary built that's a tile you're always going to work.

As for the worker, you want that incense (right?) improved in time for your second city, but I'm not sure it's needed before then (calendar luxuries generally provide fairly poor yields). Judgement call what's better from food or gold.

Grrrrr!!!!   cry

Can someone explain to me why this happened...

Last turn I moved my worker onto that sheep in the SW because this turn my borders were going to expand to take the tile.  So I moved him there with the intention of being able to start the sheep pasture this turn.  I log in to play this turn only to find out that my worker is on the tile that he is on WITH NO MOVES AVAILABLE.  So I basically just wasted two worker turns because I moved him there last turn, and this turn he was stuck where he is now.  What the F happened?

Sounds like you accidentally gave him either a another movement order or auto-explore or auto-improve command last turn after moving to the sheep.  I don't know of any in-game mechanic that would cause that other than a mistaken order.

So here we go.  I'll try to remember whatever I can from the earlier turns, since half the time I don't even remember what went on.

First here's an overview of my capital and what things look like around it:

My settler started on top of a Ruins, so when I settled the city I got a bunch of gold.  Don't remember the amount.
Warrior went exploring.  I found a ruins somewhere to my west or such (I think) and I really don't remember what that one might have gotten me.  Later on, I got a ruins to my SE that gave me a map which showed me that island to my SE (which has a ruins on it).  My last ruins which I think I found in my NE, gave me some culture.  I think that was it for ruins.

My first builds were Worker, Warrior, Scout, then started on Granary.  At one point I put a turn into another Warrior when I saw a barb approaching my undefended capital, but switched back to the Granary when it went away.  Granary finishes end of this turn.  Then it'll be Settler, probably followed by another Warrior, and then another Worker maybe.  No real idea here.

I've wasted a lot of worker turns.  First, I think I must have messed up getting the plantation started on that tile 2SE of my capital, since after it being worked on a few turns my worker seemed like he was done since the land looked improved, but I noticed that I could still click on the icon for building the plantation.  In either case, the plantation finally finished.  Then I had the wasted 2 turns getting to the sheep, that I have no idea how that happened.   Right now, 3 turns until Sheep are improved.  Then sadly, I need to go pasture those horses by destroying that first Farm I built, since my horses appeared on that tile.  Yep, more wasted worker turns.  frown

My next city will be going on that Forest/Tundra/Hill between the lake and ocean.  It's the only spot I can really think of right now.

I was first to meet Milan, after which I met Nicolae (who is off to the West or Northwest of Milan).  Then I met Yuri.  After that I found Mombasa in the north (which Yuri had already met) and then found Yuri's borders to the NW of that.  So basically I'm currently stuck in this small corner of land with two players and two city-states blocking me in.  I know I should probably expand towards them, rather than towards that coast, but unless I somehow figure out a better spot for my 2nd city, I don't really know where to go.  I don't have enough experience with this version of Civ to know optimal city spacing or even how the tile yields work with these cities.  So.... noidea

Policies....well, same deal.  I got Tradition, then Oligarchy, then Legalism.  I get another policy in 10 turns and I have no idea what to do with it.  Is it better to get more of Tradition (such as Landed Elite for faster growth) or should I add on one of the other policies?  I just saw the 3rd civ (at least) start worshiping something, which I can only guess means they have adopted Piety.

Feel free to ask any questions....since you asking questions might help me with some of the understanding of the game.  Or offer any insights or hints in an unbiased way (if you are spoiled).  I know I can certainly use them.

Oh, I also don't know what research path to take.  I went after Calendar first for my plantations.  Then I went after Trapping (to also know where Horses are on the way), but haven't yet gotten my worker up to those Deer.  I just finished Archery this turn and was going to start The Wheel, but instead decided just now on Writing.  No real idea why, other than to be able to build a Library and/or Great Library to help with research.

And here's the Demos:
