A question: do we know whether the starts are symmetrical in any way?

In general, Egypt is a big improvement over France. It has a very good UU which remained good even after the nerf (I need to complement Krill on that: this is how you nerf a game-breaking unit without turning it into an utter garbage). Its UB guarantees me an access to a shrine which is a very big deal in such game. But I still do not have the techs I want which is rather important. This is why my initial question. If starts are symmetrical, it means that other players also target Hunting and Mining and it makes my chances to get any of those techs pretty slim.

If I keep Egypt, I will need to consider moving because the start really sucks big way. A hill 1N from Pigs or a grassland 1NE from Pigs seem like much more promising starting positiions. The problem is that the start is designed in such away that scouting out the possible avenues of moving is a really awkward thing to do.
However, I find it hard to believe that there is no food resource up nothwest which is equal or better than the sheep. And the lost turn will be pretty much immediatly made up for by the fact that the worker would be able to start pasturing the turn it is built.

From the first post in the tech thread:

For context, what I mean by that is PB27 had not literally mirrored starts, but pretty symmetrically accessible "types" of things, ie something like your metal-happy was 3 cities away, 1 calendar happy in capital, copper in 2nd city next to X food, etc. By the geometry of the map was pretty much not mirrored at all. Putting aside whether or not PB27 astro-islands only was balanced (for my part, I don't really care, it was still cool).

I think that's the only thing that's been posted on the subject of whether starts are/should-be symmetrical.

(An observation for future mapmakers: if you do not want people to move away from pre-designed capital spots, ruining the map balance, you should give them decent starts. Because two food resources on the opposite sides of the capital, two spaces away each, is an utter shit.)

Is the map cylindrical?

Consensus seemed to be that the map would be a toroid, but otherwise as "natural-looking" as possible. There might be more details in the organizing thread, but I don't have time to dig for them right now. Note the "preferably cyllindrical," but also note I was not quoting that post as established fact - just as the only thing I'm aware of anybody posting on the subject of symmetrical starts in the organizing thread: In other words, the only information on that subject to which all the players have had access upon making their picks. Naturally, everyone will make reasonable (or crazy) assumptions and inferences, and you can do that too.

Natura-looking toroid, ok.

Final decision: I'll keep Egypt. UU and UB are too good.

Hi, here's your MapCad-generated sandbox to help you plan your opening. You'll need to have RtR 2.0.8.4 installed. If something doesn't work as it should, let me know.
