BAND - captain of the band

RULER - A captain is in charge?
TRAIN - maybe, but usually a conductor?
BRIDGE captain is a thing?

RULER - rules over his ship?
PLANE - pilot
BAND - do marching bands have captains?

I like BRIDGE and RULER, but other than that I'm not sure.

A captain is often pictured with a TELESCOPE.
He is supposed to go down with a SINKing ship...
... after which he might end up on a BEACH.
He is the final authority, or RULER, on his ship.

Band - feels like a dubious connection here, only works if we extrapolate captain to mean leader in general, but lacking other options this could be what's intended.
Lab - even more of a stretch, you could connect Lab > NASA > Astronaut > Captain
Train - First thought: train as in a locomotive does not fit and captain could specifically be used to discourage us from this as opposed to something else.
Second thought: captains train their troops to keep them ready for combat and that's a pretty strong connection.
Plane - Most obvious.
Ruler - Captains rule over their subordinates.
Pit - As in pit leader as a NASCAR term?  Or possibly orchestral?  Shaky on this one.

Ranking these:

1. Plane
2. Ruler
3. Train
Then either Pit or Band

I couldn't remember whether an airline pilot is also called a captain; since everyone else liked PLANE, I'll agree with that as a first choice. I like BRIDGE for a second choice and TELESCOPE for a third. Hollywood loves to show sailing ship captains using a telescope.

Agree on the first two being PLANE -- aircraft leader is indeed called a captain -- and BRIDGE.  Prefer RULER over TELESCOPE for #3.

I think TELESCOPE is indicating a very specific image and cluing Captain I think is more to bring different images together.  If he had wanted to clue us in to the image of a captain with a telescope on the bridge of a ship i think we would have gotten a more specific clue like buccaneer or pirate.

I'm with Pindicator here, a different clue could have been used for TELESCOPE, even if it would be difficult to avoid the other nautical-themed words.

Right, I knew bridge was a connection but I couldn't remember why exactly. Tired midnight brain.

We're all agreed on the first two with plane and bridge.
I like telescope a lot, I think its possible, but it should be more of a spyglass than telescope. ruler and band feel about the same distance from captain to me, but everyone but DaveV has ruler over band.
